Summary

  1. What are the Cleveland Browns' biggest needs?published at 01:41 British Summer Time

    Pick number five

With Deshaun Watson set for another lengthy injury lay-off, the Cleveland Browns need a quarterback. But after Cam Ward, they obviously felt like Travis Hunter wasn't worth a second overall pick so traded down.

During free agency the Browns brought in Kenny Pickett, a first-round pick from 2022, and re-signed veteran Joe Flacco, so they could try to get by with them under centre until next year.

Cleveland managed to convince star Myles Garrett to stay in the off-season so they could have looked to boost their defence by pairing him with another elite pass rusher in Abdul Carter, but trading down saw them miss out on him too.

  2. Who is Will Campbell?published at 01:40 British Summer Time

Offensive lineman - Louisiana State University

At 6ft 6in and weighing 319lb (145kg), Will Campbell was seen as the top offensive lineman in this year's draft.

After committing to LSU in his home state of Louisiana, Campbell spent three years playing tackle, being named the best blocker in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) last season.

Despite playing tackle in college, the 21-year-old is expected to ultimately be moved inside to guard.

  3. 'Campbell not a sure thing'published at 01:40 British Summer Time

I thought Campbell's 2024 tape was a struggle at times and while he's athletic, he lacks ideal length and he toiled against pro-ready pass rushers like Arkansas' Landon Jackson.

The Patriots need to protect quarterback Drake Maye but Campbell isn't a sure thing.

  4. Pick 4 - Patriots select Will Campbellpublished at 01:39 British Summer Time

    Offensive tackle - LSU

A no-brainer for the New England Patriots as they pick up some protection for quarterback Drake Maye, who showed some promise last year despite being under all kinds of pressure.

The offensive line was a bit of a mess last season to say the least, but Campbell will hopefully help beef that up a little.

  5. 'Carter a lightning pass rusher'published at 01:34 British Summer Time

The Giants have had to live in a division with Micah Parsons and now they'll hope they have their own version. Like Parsons, Carter started as a linebacker at Penn State before switching to the edge. He's lightning as a pass rusher and had an outstanding 2024 season.

  6. Who is Abdul Carter?published at 01:33 British Summer Time

    Defensive end - Penn State

The highest-rated full-time defensive player in this year's draft, Abdul Carter started out as a linebacker at Penn State.

He then switched to defensive end for his third and final college season and established himself as the most impressive pass rusher among this year's prospects.

The 21-year-old claimed 12 sacks and two forced fumbles from 16 games last season as the Nittany Lions went 13–3 before losing to Notre Dame in the national championship semi-finals.

In just one season playing on the edge, Carter has shown he has the athleticism to succeed in the NFL and is expected to get even better as he gains experience and adds more weight to his 6ft 3in frame.

  7. What are the New England Patriots' biggest needs?published at 01:33 British Summer Time

    Pick number four

The New England Patriots aren't after a quarterback with Drake Maye, last year's third overall pick, having impressed during his rookie season.

That was despite playing behind arguably last season's worst offensive line, but the Pats can address that issue now by selecting Will Campbell or perhaps Armand Membou.

Maye could also use some better weapons on offence, so how about running back Ashton Jeanty or either of the top tight ends, Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland?

  8. Postpublished at 01:31 British Summer Time

Travis Hunter, who hails from Florida, on being drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars: "I’m super excited, I get to go back home.

"We had no conversations outside of the Combine. I want to cry but I can’t because I’m too excited."

  9. Pick 3 - Giants select Abdul Carterpublished at 01:30 British Summer Time

    Edge - Penn State

The New York Giants decide against a quarterback and instead go for a game-wrecking edge rusher in Abdul Carter.

Big Blue had holes everywhere in the roster after last season, but Carter is seen as one of the biggest sure things in the draft, a monster at hunting down QBs and similar to Micah Parsons.

The war room in Gotham is delighted with that pick. Carter is from Philadelphia but will now focus on hunting down Jalen Hurts when he faces the Super Bowl champion Eagles twice a season in the NFC East.

  10. What are the New York Giants' biggest needs?published at 01:28 British Summer Time

    Pick number three

The New York Giants are also looking for a long-term solution at quarterback and Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe, Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough have all had private workouts with them.

As a precaution, the Giants brought in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency so perhaps one of the veteran duo could serve as a bridge QB until next year, allowing the Giants to use this pick on boosting their defensive or offensive line.

Can they afford to miss out on Abdul Carter after passing up the chance to draft Micah Parsons in 2021?

The Giants could then pick up a QB with a less valuable pick later on and treat them as a development project.

  11. Who is Travis Hunter?published at 01:27 British Summer Time

    Cornerback/wide receiver - Colorado

Travis Hunter was the number one ranked college recruit in 2022 and was persuaded to flip his commitment from Florida State to Jackson State, who were coached by Deion Sanders.

Sanders was the last genuine two-way player in the NFL and has guided Hunter's development, with both leaving for Colorado in 2023.

Last season Hunter played all 13 of Colorado's games, claiming four interceptions and 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. He played 714 (87%) of their offensive snaps and 748 (83%) of their defensive.

The 21-year-old not only became the first player to win the awards for best defensive player and best receiver last year, but he also claimed the Heisman Trophy for best college player overall.

  12. 'Hunter a blue-chip player'published at 01:26 British Summer Time

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield and NFL on 5 Live host

Most evaluators saw two true blue-chip players in the draft in Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter. The Jaguars are moving up and will give Hunter the opportunity to play both receiver and cornerback, mainly because he reportedly told teams he insists on doing both. He's a talent but can he realistically play both sides of the ball?

  13. Pick 2 - Jaguars select Travis Hunterpublished at 01:24 British Summer Time

    Wide receiver/cornerback - Colorado

    NFL DraftImage source, Getty Images

It's a big move to trade up from five to two, and it had to be for a big player - and there's arguably none bigger than Travis Hunter, who has wowed in college as the best cornerback and best wide receiver around.

Can he play on both offence and defence in the NFL? We'll find out in Jacksonville, and at Wembley Stadium as well, next season.

And with the Jags trading up, giving up a first rounder next year for him, that's not just for him to play cornerback, or receiver, they're banking on him doing both.

  14. Postpublished at 01:22 British Summer Time

NFL reporter Ian Rapoport: "It's a blockbuster trade. The Jacksonville Jaguars wanted to be bold and they have been bold."

  15. Top quarterback recordspublished at 01:20 British Summer Time

Picking a quarterback with the number one overall pick does not yield immediate results, as the rookie records of the last five show.

Of course, if you have the first pick that's due to being a poor team the year before, but only the Bengals with Joe Burrow will judge that pick a success right now.

And as the Bears now know after last year, you may get your star QB but you have to build the right team around him for them to succeed.

  16. What are the Jacksonville Jaguars' biggest needs?published at 01:20 British Summer Time

Pick number five traded with Browns for pick two

Last season was a step back for the Jacksonville Jaguars, which resulted in Doug Pederson losing his job as head coach.

New coach Liam Coen has a number of needs to address but after an injury-hit season, quarterback Trevor Lawrence would appreciate some help on offence - either greater protection in the offensive line or a premium weapon for him to pass to.

And after making such a huge trade, it's surely to go and get Travis Hunter?

  17. Who is Cam Ward?published at 01:19 British Summer Time

    Quarterback - Miami

Cam Ward was a zero-star recruit coming out of high school and only received two scholarship offers.

After two years with the Incarnate Word he transferred to Washington State, then after another two he joined Miami for his fifth and final college season.

The 6ft 2in quarterback helped the Hurricanes to a 10-3 record, throwing for 4,313 passing yards and 39 touchdowns - the most in college football - and was one of the four Heisman Trophy finalists.

The 22-year-old has been compared to Patrick Mahomes for his play-making ability - he can throw from different arm angles and make off-platform plays - and he replaced Shedeur Sanders as the favourite to be the first overall pick in January.

  18. Trade Alert!published at 01:18 British Summer Time

As mentioned - the Jacksonville Jaguars have traded up from five to two after agreeing on a blockbuster deal with the Cleveland Browns.

Jacksonville will send their fifth overall pick, along with their second round and fourth round picks and significantly their first round selection for next year to Cleveland.

The Jags are on the clock!

  19. 'Big turnaround for Ward'published at 01:15 British Summer Time

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield and NFL on 5 Live host

A year ago Cam Ward was seen as a late rounder, he wasn't even invited to the Senior Bowl and he reneged on a decision to turn pro to gamble on a big year with the Miami Hurricanes. It's remarkable that 12 months later he's turned himself into the first overall pick.

  20. Pick 1 - Titans select Cam Wardpublished at 01:15 British Summer Time

    Quarterback - Miami

And there it is - as expected the Tennessee Titans select Miami quarterback Cam Ward to try and lead the revival of the franchise in Nashville.

The Titans had plenty of interest from other teams in trading for the top pick, but they were having none of that, they wanted who they believe will be their franchise QB for years to come.
