Summary

  1. 'Pearce pick a double risk for Falcons'published at 04:07 British Summer Time

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield and NFL on 5 Live host

Nobody questions the talent of James Pearce Jr. He should be a top-10 pick. The reason he lasted was due to widely reported concerns about his level of maturity.

This is a double risk given the Falcons traded away their first rounder next year to make this move.

  2. Pick 26 - Falcons select James Pearce Jrpublished at 04:05 British Summer Time

    Edge - Tennessee

Wow, the Falcons come back into the first round to double down on their attempts to add a pass rush in Atlanta with James Pearce joining the earlier first round selection Jalon Walker.

Pearce could have been Atlanta's first pick back at 15, but Jalon Walker still being on the board was just too good for them to turn down - and with then Pearce remaining undrafted this long they decided to take the plunge.

The Falcons showed last year when drafting Michael Penix after signing Kirk Cousins that they're not scared to make a splash if they have to - and they've gone all-in on defence tonight.

  3. Trade Alert!published at 04:03 British Summer Time

The Atlanta Falcons have traded back into the first round after doing a deal with the Los Angeles Rams.

It's cost them their first round pick next year though so that's a big price to pay - they must really like whoever they're going to call out next.

  4. 'Athletic Dart will need to pick his moments'published at 04:02 British Summer Time

BBC Radio Sheffield and NFL on 5 Live host

Jaxson Dart is a Brian Daboll type of quarterback. He's aggressive with his arm and wants to take shots downfield. He's athletic enough to make plays with his legs. He just need to learn to pick his moments better and he collapsed in a key game against Florida at the end of last season.

  5. Pick 25 - Giants select Jaxson Dartpublished at 03:59 British Summer Time

    Quarterback - Ole Miss

It is a quarterback, but it's NOT Shedeur Sanders, and instead the Giants have opted for Jaxson Dart from Mississippi.

Sanders is much more overn ready than Dart in terms of starting in the NFL next season, but the Giants have veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston currently on the roster so there's no urgent need to start from day one.

They obviously feel there is more upside to Dart.

  6. Postpublished at 03:57 British Summer Time

According to Ian Rapoport, the Philadelphia Eagles' general manager Howie Roseman is also trying to trade up.

As the Super Bowl winners, the Eagles currently have the final pick of the first round.

  7. 'Jackson explosive and exceptional run-blocker'published at 03:55 British Summer Time

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield and NFL on 5 Live host

Donovan Jackson handled his business last season when he was asked to move to left tackle, highlighting his enormous potential. He'll be back at left guard in Minnesota and he's an explosive, exceptional run-blocker who finishes off the Vikings' O-line rebuild.

  8. Trade Alert!published at 03:55 British Summer Time

The New York Giants have traded up back into the first round!

A ray of hope for Shedeur Sanders?

Big Blue have traded with the Houston Texans and it's most likely a quarterback on the menu, if not Sanders then maybe Jaxson Dart or Jalen Milroe.

But they really have to come away with a QB from this draft.

  9. Postpublished at 03:54 British Summer Time

Shedeur Sanders' brother Deion Sanders Jr has retweeted a quote, external by NFL analyst Mel Kiper Jr: "Shedeur Sanders will come back to haunt these organisations that are passing him up."

  10. Pick 24 - Vikings select Donovan Jacksonpublished at 03:53 British Summer Time

    Guard - Ohio State

Jackson played at guard and left tackle at Ohio State, but he's most likely to line up inside for Minnesota next season.

What a genuinely brilliant moment at the draft! For years Green Bay fans have been screaming for a first-round wide receiver, through the Aaron Rodgers years and more recently the Jordan Love times.

And of all times, and of all places to finally do it - the Packers do it in the shadow of their own Lambeau Field stadium in front of thousands of their own fans.

Playing to the crowd? Maybe, but Golden has talent so this is more than just a PR move.

Look at that suit on the red carpet in Green Bay.

I guess it was just meant to be for Matthew Golden and the Packers.

  13. 'Golden a golden pick for the Packers'published at 03:49 British Summer Time

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield and NFL on 5 Live host

The Packers were long overdue to draft a wide receiver early. Matthew Golden runs crisp, precise routes and has enough speed to be more of a deep threat than he was in college.

Like Emeka Egbuka, he's also mature and well respected by team-mates.

  14. Pick 23 - Packers select Matthew Goldenpublished at 03:47 British Summer Time

    Wide receiver - Texas

Wow! Packers president Mark Murphy picks this draft on home soil to do what Green Bay fans have been begging for now for years - and draft a wide receiver!

Texas Longhorns speedster Matthew Golden becomes the first wideout selected in the first round by the Packers since 2002.

    And the fans go wild!

  15. Go Pack Go!published at 03:40 British Summer Time

Plenty of noise in the Lambeau Field car park with the Green Bay Packers on the clock - it's such a small town that almost all of the population may well be stood by this stage right now...

  16. 20 years on...published at 03:39 British Summer Time

At the 2005 draft Aaron Rodgers thought he was going to be the first overall pick - when Alex Smith got the nod from the 49ers Rodgers had to sit and wait as pick after pick was made without his name being called.

    Sound familiar?

That's what is happening to Shedeur Sanders tonight, 20 years later - and he'll hope his story has as happy an ending as Rodgers, who was picked at 24 by the Green Bay Packers and went on to win a Super Bowl and four MVP awards.

  17. 'Prototype running back'published at 03:38 British Summer Time

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield and NFL on 5 Live host

Omarion Hampton is a prototype for the running back position. His frame is perfect, he had so many yards after contact and he's a complete runner.

Jim Harbaugh wants to run the ball and Hampton is going to have a ton of success in LA.

  18. Pick 22 - Chargers select Omarion Hamptonpublished at 03:36 British Summer Time

    Running back - North Carolina

A bruising running back heading to Los Angeles to join Jim Harbaugh - who just loves to pound that football down the throats off the opposition.

The Chargers have strengthened the offensive line and now Hampton will add another bruising yet speedy rusher to the mix with Najee Harris joining in free agency from Pittsburgh.

  19. 'Harmon a disruptive option'published at 03:27 British Summer Time

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield and NFL on 5 Live host

Defensive tackle was always a viable option for the Steelers given how bad their run defense was last year. Derrick Harmon is quick to get into the backfield and he's highly disruptive.

Now the question is whether anyone will take Shedeur Sanders tonight.

  20. Pick 21 - Steelers select Derrick Harmonpublished at 03:25 British Summer Time

    Defensive tackle - Oregon

What a reaction from the crowd as the Steelers turn down the chance to pick Shedeur Sanders in favour of strengthening that defensive line in Pittsburgh with Derrick Harmon.

Mike Tomlin has always had a decent defence, but the interior was not good last season as they struggled against the run - something they're looking to fix now.

It still leaves them without a quarterback though, and without a second round pick to get one either, or use as trade capital.

Maybe Tomlin has had a call from Aaron Rodgers we don't know about?
