  1. Do the referees really favour the Chiefs?published at 23:17 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

    Julian Edelman

Julian Edelman is sick of accusations that the league or the referees are biased towards Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

A three-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots as they dominated the NFL - he knows success often brings jealousy.

"It's apparent when you're on top everyone wants to try and bring you down," he told the Rich Eisen Podcast. "It's a bunch of baloney that the league is helping the Kansas City Chiefs

"If you've got a problem with it – go beat them. The refs aren't involved when you throw interceptions, when you fumble the ball, when you jump offsides, when you don't convert third down or fourth down. They can't control that.

"If you want to beat them, go beat them. Don't just talk about it, do do it. I'm so sick and tired of hearing people say that about the Chiefs."

  2. How are the Super Bowl referees chosen?published at 23:16 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Who are the referees for the Super Bowl?

Here's the all-important referee line-up for the Super Bowl - and plenty of people will be wacthing this crew very closely tonight.

And if you're wondering how they're chosen, well it's an all-star crew made up of the officials with the highest grade in each position throughout the season.

And as for the grading system, it could hardly be more thorough, with a panel of former officials and former coaches marking each one on every single play of every single game - including the TV replay officials.

So, no refereeing controversy tonight please...

'I'm here for Kendrick' - Stormzy, Shaq & more turn out for Super Bowl

A British accent goes a long way in America. It can garner a wry smile from a serving waitress, a local resident offering to walk you to a destination or a free dessert. Bread and butter pudding in case you’re wondering.

A British accent can also get you an interview with Stormzy. The guestlist at a VIP party which included Leonardo DiCaprio, Serena Williams and Kevin Costner was the place to be this weekend.

Other stars such as Post Malone and Travis Scott walked the red carpet. But Brit Award winner Stormzy decided to use a side entrance.

As a host of media crews spotted him – journalists shouted in his direction to get him to come over. He refused. Until a lone British voice – caused him to double take. I’d interviewed him a few times and after some oohing and aahing he came over and spoke only to the BBC.

He admitted he knew very little about the NFL but would be at the game just to see Kendrick Lamar’s half-time show.

“I'm here to see Kendrick to be fair, I'm not going to act like I know everything about the NFL, but I appreciate it and I’m here to watch an amazing half-time show,” said Stormzy. As always with a Super Bowl half time performance - Kendrick Lamar’s set list and whether he’ll have any guest appearances is a closely guarded secret.

But anticipation is high – even among fellow musicians. Stormzy added: “It's going to be phenomenal. It's going to be brilliant. I mean to see it in the flesh. I'm just honoured man. We trust his instinctive feeling to do whatever feels best.”

  4. What is Patrick Mahomes' play-off record?published at 23:15 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Patrick Mahomes at the Super Bowl

As you'd expect, Patrick Mahomes is rather good in the play-offs, going 17-3 in post-season games with three Super Bowl wins from four appearances.

Every single one of his seven seasons he's either made the Super Bowl or lost in the AFC Championship game the match before. Just incredible.

    Super Bowl graphic

The traditional pre-game 'rooting map', external, external suggests that most of America wants Philadelphia to win, but speaking to neutrals in New Orleans, it seems a 50-50 split.

The Eagles will play in their third Super Bowl in eight years, their first Super Bowl win in 2018 followed by 38-35 defeat by Kansas City in 2023.

This time round, the Chiefs are slight favourites, but many of those backing 'the Birds' want to see Saquon Barkley cap a scintillating season in style.

    Patrick Mahomes v Jalen Hurts - Passing yards 3,928 v 2,903; Passing TDs 26 v 18; Rushing yards 307 v 630; Rushing TDs 2 v 14

Checking out the stats from the regular season, the difference appears clear between tonight's quarterbacks - Mahomes throws, Hurts runs.

While that isn't entirely accurate, and watch for Mahomes' clever scrambling this evening, Hurts' threat on the ground makes him a difficult proposition.

And if the Eagles get within a yard of the endzone, the Eagles' infamous tush-push will surely be deployed to get Hurts another score.

We've come to watch the match with the Manchester Titans American Football Team at an Irish Bar in Manchester - and the vibes are immaculate. Although, someone did call football, soccer.

"We have to distinguish the two when we play American Football," Katie, 27, told me.

They're a group of many in the UK staying up into the early hours of the morning to watch the match which is thousands of miles away in New Orleans.

Social secretary, Toni, 24, supports the New York Jets and tells us "it's the biggest night of the year. We love it. We also love Travis Kelce." She doesn't want the Chiefs to win. Why? "Taylor Swift, that's why".

"I want my team, the Chiefs, to win," Becky, 35, tells us wearing a Kelce jersey.

Toni buts in - "We hate the chiefs." it's pretty split here Chiefs versus Eagles.

Becky continues: "Each year we come out to support the superbowl - it's a big event for us. I'm just glad I got the day off work tomorrow so I can talk to you without getting in trouble."

I'm sure you know them all by now, but you can't overstate just how important Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are to this team - especially when it comes to the play-offs.

The Eagles will have a plan for Kelce, but what sets these two apart is their almost telapathic connection when plays break down. As soon as Mahomes starts to scramble and goes off script, Kelce always seems to know where to go to get open.

Chris Jones is the defensive leader for the Chiefs, and the defence has been the driving force of this run back to the Super Bowl. He wreaks havoc from any position along the defensive line and they defence will look to him to set the tone.

  9. Key characters for the Eaglespublished at 23:10 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles (23:30 GMT)

Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts and Jalen arter

We've spilled plenty of ink already on Saquon Barkley and his record-breaking season. If he lights up today, the Eagles will take some stopping.

Don't underestimate quarterback Jalen Hurts though. This season, he's completed 68.7% of his throws - a career high - throwing for 2,903 yards and 18 TDs against five interceptions. He's also added 630 rushing yards and 14 rushing scores of his own.

And then there's the defence, led by sophomore defensive tackle Jalen Carter. This year, he has 42 tackles and four-and-a-half sacks while his mere presence has caused opposing quarterbacks kittens over the second half of the season.

Patrick Mahomes is the master of game-winning drives. Just ask the Buffalo Bills, the Baltimore Ravens, the Cincinnati Bengals, oh and the Philadelphia Eagles themselves.

If he's within touching distance as the clock ticks down in the fourth quarter, only a fool would bet against him getting it done.

So, the Eagles need to get in front early and stay out of reach. Otherwise, it'll be heartbreak again.

    Phoebe Schecter
    BBC Sport NFL columnist

A lot of people are saying the Chiefs, but I've been going against the grain and saying the Eagles. I think it's going to be by a field goal.

The key will be how the Chiefs are going to stop Saquon Barkley. The top four running backs they've gone up against - Bijan Robinson, Derrick Henry, Bucky Irving, Chuba Hubbard - they've kept them all to under 58 yards.

My head says I want to see the Chiefs make history, my heart says I love the Eagles - let someone else have a chance. And it's Saquon's birthday so, come on, give the man a present!

    Score: Chiefs 24-27 Eagles

    MVP: Saquon Barkley

Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles (23:30 GMT)

    Jason Bell
Former NFL cornerback and BBC Sport NFL analyst

You've got to dethrone Mahomes. Until somebody does that, you've got to back the Chiefs. Josh Allen went close but not close enough – and he's the MVP.

You just have to look at what Mahomes does on third downs and he rarely has turnovers. That's crucial, that's how you really assess a quarterback.

Candidly, if Philadelphia can pull it off... they're from our division... I don't like the Eagles, they're one of our biggest rivals, so I'll be raising up about three in the morning and screaming into my pillow. That's what you'll hear across New Orleans.

I think the Eagles are going to win. I hate the Chiefs - you've got to hate the Chiefs as a Charger - so I can't see them winning. I think the D line for the Eagles is going to dominate and Saquon has looked unstoppable.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid really is a mastermind, but his defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has had a huge impact on the team this season as the defence has led their challenge.

Spagnuolo does not have the most talented defence in terms of names, but he knows how to plan, and more crucially he knows how to adapt during the game and change his approach judging on what's happening on the field.

Also, more often than not on this great run they've been on, he manages to dial up just the right defensive pressures at just the right time to win games. If the Super Bowl is on the line tonight, KC will trust in Spags to finish it off.

  19. The Eagles will win if...the defence stop Mahomespublished at 23:07 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles (23:30 GMT)

It sounds simple but beating Patrick Mahomes in the game's biggest moments has proved beyond the NFL's biggest defences.

Head coach Andy Reid and Mahomes are masters at finding clutch plays in the biggest moments - that's why they've won 12 one-score games this season.

But this Eagles defence have allowed the fewest points per game of any team this season and with Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith and Darius Slay, they have an elite core.

Can defensive coordinator Vic Fangio scheme something to knock Mahomes out of his stride? The Super Bowl may depend on it.

  20. Mahomes happy to play the villainpublished at 23:06 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles (23:30 GMT)

Fans of 31 other NFL teams are a bit sick and tired of the Kansas City Chiefs winning all the time - but Patrick Mahomes is more than happy being the villain.

"If winning football games makes you a villain, we're going to keep going out there and doing it," said Mahomes on Tuesday.

"We embrace who we are. We believe we play the game the right way, with a lot of heart and passion for the game."

It was a similar story with Tom Brady's New England Patriots when they dominated - something Mahomes knows only too well from his younger days as a Dallas Cowboys fan.

"It's all fun because I was that guy," Mahomes added. "I was a Cowboys fan growing up, and I used to hate the Patriots.

"But I think, more than anything, I appreciate the greatness of the Patriots now when I see how hard it was to do what they did.

"Hopefully we're just giving people a great product to watch, and they can see the love for the game that we have. All the other stuff is kind of outside noise."
