That onside kick at the Super Bowl Sean Payton called in Miami was one of the biggest shock moments in the big game's history - and being there in the press box there was an audible gasp even from the seasoned NFL hacks assembled.

Of course, the shame is now that due to new rules about onside kicks Sean Payton wouldn't be allowed to call that surprise play these days...

  2. Great punt (real one this time)published at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-10 Buffalo Bills

OK, so Denver can't convert another third down and they do actually kick the punt this time and it's another beauty as Riley Dixon and Marvin Mims combine with Mims gathering and down the ball on the Buffalo one-yard line.

Sean Payton had to steal back a posession. He did it in Super Bowl 43 with the Saints against the Colts. He's convinced his team that they are the better team and they need possession back.

  4. Fake punt!published at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-10 Buffalo Bills

Trickeration! Sean Payton dials up the fake punt, and it's a beauty as punter Riley Dixon just pulls the ball back up as he's about to kick, and throws a lovely spiral to Marvin Mims for 15 yards.

We all love a fake field goal and you got more than usual in the play-offs when coaches empty their playbooks in win or go home situations.

  5. Three-and-outpublished at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

Bo Nix takes off and throws on the run but he's off target, and almost picked, so Denver have to punt.

[By running the ball] you're eliminating some of Denver's best pass rushers, you're slowing them down. They now have to have their eyes on the running backs and be like 'hey, we've got to be part of this run defence'.

  7. Postpublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-10 Buffalo Bills

Denver have an issue on defence now - their strength is the pass rush but they can't get close to Josh Allen thanks to Buffalo's power running game. That's something the Broncos have to find a way to deal with.

Meanwhile, they're back on offence, having donw nothing since that opening drive touchdown.

We call Josh Allen Superman for a reason because he can fly in any weather. He has answered the bell, he's calmed down.

Allen right now in this offence - the offensive line is pushing people out the way and that's the key. If you can run the ball in the redzone you can score.

  9. touchdown

And after that power run from Josh Allen, he next hands the ball off to James Cook for the running back to punch it into the end zone for the first Bills touchdown of the game.

Cook had 16 rushing scores in the regular season and Buffalo led the NFL with 32 touchdowns on the ground - even beating more celebrated running games like Baltimore and Philadelphia.

That 13-play drive took Buffalo 81 yards and just oozed class and power - two things Buffalo have shown all season.

  10. Can't stop the Joshpublished at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-3 Buffalo Bills

Josh Allen is a bull of a man, and when he builds up a head of steam he's so tough to bring down even for the big men on defence.

He pounts the ball for a first down to convert on third-and-three.

I think Josh Allen anxious to get this game over with, but you have to live in the moment. Bo Nix came out first and did what Josh usually does. Then Josh came out and couldn't match it and he looks antsy.

Josh Allen looks antcy, I don't like his footwork in the pocket. So you lean on the run game. Sometimes you just got to settle your quarterback, that's why you have a dynamic run game with a physical offensive line.

  13. End of first quarterpublished at 18:36 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

Well, that was a lively start! A bolt of lightning from Denver early on and Buffalo settling into the game after that, and moving the chains nicely heading into the second quarter.

A really good contest this on both sides of the ball.

  14. Third down conversionpublished at 18:34 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-3 Buffalo Bills

You'll hear a lot about third down conversions and it really is the essence of the game, if you can continually convert on third down you'll do alright in this league.

Josh Allen converts a third-and-five with a laser over the middle to Curtis Samuel.

  15. Postpublished at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-3 Buffalo Bills

A nice nine-yard run from Josh Allen, but that's all down to his offensive line who gave him oodles of time in the pocket to size up the field before he took off.

Yes, Allen is brilliant but his O-line gets a huge assist on that one.

  16. Scrum!published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-3 Buffalo Bills

James Cook gets 16 yards on the rush - but that only tells half the story as he was stopped after about five yards before the big guys in blue up front got hold of him and produced a rugby-esque scrum, actually probably more of a rolling maul to squeeze out at least an extra 10 yards.

    Teamwork.

  17. Bills offence back on the fieldpublished at 18:28 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

Josh Allen back in and Buffalo back to moving the ball quickly again - Ty Johnson produces an 11-yard run to move the chains.

  18. No goodpublished at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-3 Buffalo Bills

Bo Nix scampers off out of the pocket on third down, but Matt Milano has spottedh im and matches him stride for stride to force him out for no gain and the Broncos have to punt.

  19. ouch!

Ouch!published at 18:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

    Denver Broncos 7-3 Buffalo Bills

Bills cornerback Taron Johnson is down after a clash of heads when making a tackle on Javonte Williams. There's a fair bit of concern among the Buffalo sideline and head coach Sean McDermott is on the field to check on his man.

The do not want to lose Johnson.

Bo Nix has been playing as well as any quarterback in the NFL. He's been the difference lately. He's growing in maturity.
