Washington Commanders 7-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jayden Daniels goes long down the right sideline towards Terry McLaurin.

The Washington receiver dives for the ball and for a moment it looks like he's grabbed it, until it bobbles out of bounds as McLaurin lands in the end zone.

The Commanders will prepare for a field-goal attempt as we reach the two-minute warning.

Tampa Bay as a defence, they blitz everybody. At some point you're going to see everybody on that defence blitzing to try to affect Jayden Daniels.

  7. ouch!

Ouch!published at 02:13 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

Washington Commanders 7-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jayden Daniels was tackled just after throwing his touchdown pass to Dyami Brown. That may account for the small cut he's sustained on his right cheek.

It looks like a Washington trainer has just applied some lip balm to the quarterback's cheek but apparently it's actually a sterile glue stick.

It'll take much more than that for Daniels to miss a snap on his play-off debut.

  8. Daniels swiftly adapts to life in the NFLpublished at 02:09 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

Washington Commanders 7-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Graphic showing that Jayden Daniels had 891 rushing yards in the 2024 NFL regular season

Plenty of Heisman Trophy winners have shone in the College game then failed to deliver in the big league, but Jayden Daniels has had a brilliant rookie season with the Washington Commanders.

After being the second overall draft pick, he's set the record for most rushing yards (891) and highest completion rate (69.0%) by a rookie quarterback.

While doing so he led Washington to their first winning season since 2016 and their first play-off appearance since 2020. No wonder he's the clear favourite for this season's Rookie of the Year award.

    Talk about third and long.

The Bucs are swiftly forced to third down, with 22 yards to go, as Bucky Irving is penalised for a chop block.

Baker Mayfield dumps it off to Rachaad White but the running back is pushed out of bounds nine yards short. The Bucs will have to punt having gone three and out.

  10. Points galorepublished at 02:04 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

Washington Commanders 7-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay were fourth in scoring this season with 29.5 points a game while Washington were just one place below in fifth averaging 28.5.

This is the first wildcard game in five years being played between two teams averaging over 28 points a game.

    Shootout incoming???

  11. Daniels to join exclusive rookie club?published at 02:03 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January

Washington Commanders 7-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Washington rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and Denver's Bo Nix have made their play-off debuts in tough road games tonight.

Only three rookie quarterbacks have ever won their first career play-off start on the road, how about these names?

    • Joe Flacco (2008 wildcard Baltimore at Miami)
    • Mark Sanchez (2009 wildcard New York Jets at Cincinnati)
    • Russell Wilson (2012 wildcard Seattle at Washington)

Nix didn't manage to join them earlier, as the Broncos were outclassed by the Bills. Can Daniels join them now?

Washington Commanders 7-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jayden Daniels finds Olamide Zaccheaus for a first down before fizzing another strike down the middle to Dyami Brown, external at the back of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown.

Patient play by the rookie quarterback on that drive as he kept it moving. It ended up lasting just over nine minutes and 17 plays.

The Commanders add the extra point.

Washington Commanders 0-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

    Cris Collinsworth

Jayden Daniels' numbers drop significantly when he's under pressure, and nobody has more different ways to blitz and rush the quarterback than this football team does with Todd Bowles calling the signals.

That decision backfires as Jayden Daniels targets Austin Ekeler but they fail to connect and the Commanders have to hand the ball over on downs.

Surely you just take the field goal there, settle down, and come back for more later.
