On some/seeded athletes getting byes into semi-finals:

I think it’s not rocket science. If you’ve got a race in your legs from yesterday, you are going to be more tired in these semi-finals. I’m sure European Athletics have got great reasoning behind this but I find it bizarre that some athletes are allowed to miss a race.

The irony is it is the better athletes that are given the bye so the lesser known athletes are the ones that come to this race even more tired.

Following a tight finish for second, Andrea Miklos of Romania snatches the other automatic place.

Sophie Becker finishes fourth, and unfortunately is out of contention.

It’s always good when you get the medals coming in. A couple of fourth places, lots in the top ten but when George Mills dropped his 5,000m silver medal last night, you thought right, here we go. Now we can get up and running a couple of days into the Championships.

That’s what its all about. It’s so weird to have a major championship in early June but of course the European Championships is staying far away from those Olympic Games.

Last night I really did feel the ball is getting rolling... with Glave and Mills getting us off the mark.

Great Britain's George Mills won European 5,000m silver and Romell Glave clinched bronze in the 100m, as Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs successfully defended his sprint title on a golden night for hosts Italy in Rome.

Mills, 25, clocked 13 minutes 21.38 seconds to finish runner-up to Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who proved too strong in the closing stages.

Mills' impressive run for silver - his first major international medal - followed three fourth-placed finishes for British team-mates, as 100m hurdler Cindy Sember, long jumper Jacob Fincham-Dukes and shot putter Scott Lincoln each fell narrowly short of a podium place.

Glave then ran 10.06secs to make the men's 100m podium as the British team won its first two medals on day two of the European Athletics Championships.

Home favourite Jacobs' 100m triumph in 10.02 delivered table-topping Italy's third gold medal of the night - and fifth in the opening two days as a stunning start for the hosts continued.

Jacobs handled the expectation in front of his home crowd to deliver a golden finale for the hosts as he builds towards an attempt at defending his Olympic title in Paris, following an injury-disrupted period since his surprise triumph in Tokyo in 2021.
