Soon the finalists will take to the track for the men's 800m.

Elliot Giles will fancy a shot at the podium after an impressive showing in yesterday's semi-final.

Giles didn't panic when stuck down the field into the final 200m. He found a gap down the inside and pushed into the automatic qualifiers.

Italy's Catalin Tecuceanu, the European leader this year, will start as favourite.

Finot was so in control, she really destroyed them through that last 300m, winding it up, surging a couple of times and she deserves that. It was a dominant performance.

The steeplechase was run with thunder and lightening in Rome, and the rain started again mid-race.

Far from ideal conditions, but Lizzie Bird won't mind. She has a medal around her neck once again.

A lot of these athletes are running their fastest times of the year in the heats. There’s not been a lot of good racing opportunities for steeplechasers, men or women, this summer.

That brings them to these championships fresh, and the Olympics are still seven and a half weeks away – they’re bearing down on us but at a nice steady rate with these championships to unfold fully, and then so many nations to negotiate their own Olympic trials.

    Women's high jump final

    BBC Sport

British long jumper Morgan Lake missed out on a medal after failing in her third attempt at 1.93m in the final, and was talking to BBC Sport:

Talk us through the final tonight:

"Season's best, first ever 1.90m in the outdoor season so happy with that.

"I showed some really good form in qualifying. Didn’t quite have that form today, but I do remain confident.

"Obviously it ‘s a big blow not to get a medal today or not to show my best or how I was feeling on Friday.

"Still confident for the rest of the season. I just know what I need to work on."

What does she feel she needs to work on?

"I think I need to work on doing the same jump every single time. More speed, more power and just put everything into every jump and just leave nothing.

"I think I was going through the motions tonight and I need to put all my emotions into that track."

    What has her coach said?

"He’s definitely not going to be happy with that. Obviously what we’ve been working on last year, to bring my best to the championships.

"I bought my best to the championships today but it wasn’t enough and definitely not where I’m at, so a few more weeks, a few more jumps to get ready for the Olympics."

How are you feeling about Paris?

"I’m feeling confident. I know that everything happens for a reason. I’m going to learn from this. I’ve learned a lot over the years but I know it’s there."
