There was also success this morning for Alastair Chalmers, the Guernsey-born 400m hurdler safely navigating his sway through the heats.

Chalmers notched 49.71 seconds to finish third in his heat, and navigate his way into tomorrow evening's semi-final.

"I'm healthy. I'm running well, winning races and I'm beating some guys who have been there and done it," the 24-year-old told BBC Radio Guernsey before these championships.

"I'm in great shape and just going to take it one round at a time.

"Last year was a shame getting injured early on, I just couldn't get back to my full potential.

"But this year it's just been amazing."

  2. Purchase buys place in hammer finalpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 9 June

Anna Purchase will experience her maiden European final after progressing through qualification in the women’s hammer.

Purchase, who failed to record a distance at the last European Championships in 2022, threw 68.91m with her very first attempt. She couldn’t better it with a 64.56m and a 66.44m thereafter but that first effort would be enough.

Purchase had to wait over two hours for that confirmation after being drawn in qualification group A, with compatriot Charlotte Payne among those in group B.

Payne's best distance of 68.47m was an agonising 19 centimetres short of the top 12 who advanced to the final.

Purchase, who ranked tenth overall, said: “It was OK. It was a bit of a weird event – there was not a lot of energy because we woke up really early. No one was throwing far at all but I’m glad I got the first one out as the second two weren’t quite it.”

  3. Medal table after Sunday morningpublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 9 June

Hosts Italy are still streets ahead of the rest of the competing nations.

But it's a much healthier looking medal table for GB & NI, that team half marathon gold moving them up into fourth place.

Calli Hauger-Thackery won individual half-marathon bronze and led Great Britain to team gold on the third morning of the European Athletics Championships in Rome.

Hauger-Thackery, 31, finished in one hour eight minutes 58 seconds, with Norway's Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal winning gold and Romania's Joan Chelimo Melly silver.

Abbie Donnelly was sixth, Clara Evans ninth and Lauren McNeil 17th as GB clinched team gold - with a combined time of 3:29:01 from their first three finishers.

"You work so hard that naturally as an athlete you want more but I am so happy to win the individual bronze and be part of an amazing gold medal-winning team," said Hauger-Thackery.

"It shows a lot about where British women's running is at the moment - I'm very proud of us all.

"Doing this half marathon two months out from the Olympic marathon is great preparation for me. I'll head back out to St Moritz to get that final preparation in before the big one in Paris."
