Derbyshire sealed a seven-wicket win with a day to spare despite Northants opener Ben Duckett's career-best 154.
The 20-year-old added 22 to his overnight score before being caught at slip off spinner Wes Durston (3-55).
It led to the home side's last four wickets falling for 25 runs in five overs as they were all out for 316.
Set just 72 to win, Derbyshire batsman Chesney Hughes had to retire hurt after being struck on the helmet, but they reached 72-3 soon after lunch.
Derbyshire's third victory of the season - and their first at Wantage Road since 2002 - lifted them above Northants into sixth place in Division Two and put them only one point behind Gloucestershire in fifth.
It was a second successive Championship defeat for the home side, but Duckett's century at least offered some positives as he struck 23 fours in his 215-ball knock.
And the 20-year-old also made his mark in the field by running out Wayne Madsen before Durston collected the winning single.
Derbyshire fast bowler Mark Footitt:
"I got 50 wickets at exactly the same time last year and then kicked on, so hopefully I can do the same this year.
"Good preparation was key here. I bowled three days before this game and it's been a lot easier with a few more overs under my belt and it just clicked.
"I had some trouble with no-balls and I've sorted that out and been able to concentrate on where I'm landing it."
Northants coach David Ripley:
"We were 80 runs too many in their innings with 50 extras and then 116 all out is nowhere near where we wanted to be.
"I don't think we got up for this game as much as we should have done.
"There's now a danger that our season, which has been pretty good in the Championship until now, might be tarnished.
"Only a couple of games ago we were robbed by rain of a win at Lancashire, the best side in the division, and now we've had two disappointing defeats."
