World Cricket League Four: Jersey 'good enough to have stayed up'

Jersey's bowlers struggled to adapt to the wickets in Los Angeles

The chairman of Jersey's Cricket Board says the island side are good enough to have kept their place in the fourth tier of the World Cricket League.

Jersey were relegated on net run-rate despite wins over champions USA and Italy in the group stage.

It is the third time since that Jersey have been relegated from Division Four.

"We're a much better side than our position in this tournament is going to suggest it might be," Ward Jenner told BBC Radio Jersey.

"Our bowling hasn't been as penetrative as the other sides, it took us some time to get used to the conditions.

"No-one had ever played on these pitches before and they are alien to us, they're very different to playing at the Farmers in May on a bit of a green top where our seamers can exert real control."

Jenner is optimistic that Jersey can once again win promotion form the fifth tier of non-test playing nations, with youngsters such as Jonty Jenner and 15-year-old Harrison Carlyon leading the way.

"We've got some key players who we need to make sure we keep hold of, keep fit and keep them enthusiastic about the game," he said.

"There are a couple of youngsters coming through, but we're are still a young side and I don't expect us to lose many, if any, of the players here.

"They're only going to get stronger and they're going to get more match exposure and experience and hopefully we won't find ourselves missing out simply because of a lack of match experience in these tournaments."
