Ben Stokes slog-sweeps for sixImage source, Getty Images

It feels like Ben Stokes is just ramping it up here. He isn't willing to play for lunch.

He's keen to show his intent. He wants the scoreboard moving and reel in West Indies' target.

  2. Eng 150-5published at 31 overs

Slog sweep six for Stokes. Try saying that 10 times at pace.

Motie is plonked into the Hollies Stand.

Stokes managed a watchful 23 from his first 41 balls. He now has 21 from his last 14.

  3. Eng 141-5published at 30 overs

Unless my ears are deceiving me, the Hollies Stand is up and running. The obligatory chorus of Bon Jovi shortly pre-lunch. Is that allowable? I'll resist the temptation to type something unoriginal about livin' on prayers.

After Ben Stokes went walkabout in Holder's last over, Joshua Da Silva is up to the stumps. So what does Stokes do? Drive with a straight bat to the mid-on boundary, of course.

Motie finds Stokes' outside edge but it flies wide of slip. Stokes trying to play as late as possible here.

  6. Eng 126-5published at 28 overs

20 minutes until lunch. England have done well since slipping to 54-5.

Joe Root celebrates his half-centuryImage source, Getty Images

There is a real standing round of applause for Joe Root's half-century. That was people not just appreciating Root, his runs and who he has overtaken to become the seventh-highest Test run-scorer today, but also the match situation in which he has scored the runs.

  8. 50 runs

50 for Joe Rootpublished at 27.5 overs

Well batted Joe Root. 50 up from 68 balls, with a quartet of fours. A strike-rate of 73.52 is pretty impressive given the low boundary count.

His 63rd in Test match cricket, plus the small matter or 32 centuries.

The West Indies non-review has now cost them 47 runs.

  9. Eng 123-5published at 27.2 overs

Shuffle, shuffle, bang. Holder smashed to the cover boundary. Stokes on the pre-lunch charge?

Please to report that there is still no sign of heightened tension in Camp Smith. He is virtually horizontal as he watches on from the dressing room.

  11. Eng 119-5published at 27 overs

Stokes survives. More than that, he takes a single. Tidy start from Motie.

Ben Stokes won't have forgot the pearler that Gudakesh Motie bowled him with through the gate at Lord's.

First run off Motie. Means Ben Stokes is on strike...

  14. Eng 117-5published at 26 overs

Almost a maiden but then Stokes spoils Holder's fun with two off the last.

Point to note: West Indies were also 115-5 yesterday.

    Maiden to begin for Motie.

Spotted a lovely piece of cricketing history nestled away in the cricket museum at Edgbaston. This mint-condition blazer belonged to batter Alvin Kallicharran, who played 66 Tests for West Indies and also had a long spell with Warwickshire.

Kallicharran was actually involved in a controversial run out against England during the first Test in Trinidad in 1974. He defended the last ball of the second day and then began to walk off, but England captain Tony Greig threw down the stumps. The crowd booed.

After two-and-a-half hours of negotiations after the players had left the field at the close, England withdrew the appeal.

    Alex Carey... take note?

Speaking of spinners from the West Indies, Timothy Abraham (who, for the avoidance of doubt, has never bowled spin, or indeed at all in international cricket) was awake with the larks morning and found this beauty...

  18. Eng 115-5published at 24 overs

Root and Stokes nudging it about nicely. Root's strike-rate is 84.21 and he isn't even taking any risks. A sign of the times.

Spin time. Gudakesh Motie is about to bowl.

In days gone by England would have tried to dig themselves out of this hole but they are cruising out of it at the moment.

Joe Root is looking lovely and Ben Stokes is playing nicely too.

Not much by way of alarm in Holder's first over.
