That four a couple of moments ago took Joe Root past 12,000 runs in Test cricket. He is the seventh player to achieve that milestone.

    Trail by 113 runs

It's spin from the Birmingham End after lunch in the form of Guyanese left-arm tweaker Gudakesh Motie.

He's busily through his delivery stride but there's plenty of vacant spaces either side of the pitch milk singles. Both Joe Root and Ben Stokes content to do so.

Both these batters are going to pull if it's in the right slot. They aren't going to duck. It's an interesting mode of attack.

  4. Eng 166-5published at 33.3 overs

Alzarri Joseph has not quite got his radar to the left-right hand combination. Joe Root is on strike and the West Indies quick gives him a freebie on his legs, which he gently pulls for four.

That boundary helps Root pass 12,000 Test runs.

Fifty for Stokespublished at 33.1 overs

It's short from Alzarri Joseph first up and Ben Stokes swivels to help it round the corner for four.

That brings up his 33rd Test half-century.

Right, Alzarri Joseph has the ball in hand and Ben Stokes is on strike.

    'Play' call the umpires.

I was lucky enough to spend an hour or so in the Warwickshire CCC museum - situated behind the Wyatt Stand - before play started earlier and had a browse of the various bits of cricketana and fascinating exhibits.

That means you'll be in for a bit of history lesson this afternoon I'm afraid.

If you're at the ground today there's even the chance to grab a free souvenir celebrating Brian Lara's 501* for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994.

    Get there quick.

Whatever light moisture there might have been around appears to have gone and Edgbaston is now bathed in sunshine.

The motors on the hover cover have just roared into life and it's currently being moved off the pitch.

We will be back under way in five minutes or so.

England's real strength in their middle order. West Indies did the hard work this morning and put Root and Stokes under pressure. They executed their plans nicely and that was nice to see. They will need realign after lunch though and if they can take a couple of quick wickets they'll be back ahead in the game.

  10. Recap: Stokes shinespublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 27 July

Alongside Joe Root, England skipper Ben Stokes has mixed patience with moments of aggression.

He's hit four fours and one six - off Gudakesh Motie - in his knock of 48 not out having shared an unbroken stand of 103 for the sixth wicket with Root.

Stokes will be eyeing a big score after the interval.

  11. Recap: Root survives then flourishespublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 27 July

Joe Root had a lucky escape after West Indies declined to review an lbw shout when the England batter was struck on the knee roll.

They will be ruing it over lunch, however, after the ball-tracking technology showed it would have been out.

Since then the former England captain has settled in and reached his 63rd Test half-century.

  12. Recap: Pope & Brook depart earlypublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 27 July

A quick recap of what happened this morning, then.

West Indies took two quick wickets as both Harry Brook and Ollie Pope to leave England reeling at 54-5.

There's a tiny bit of moisture in the air here at Edgbaston. Nothing which will affect things too dramatically I don't think, but the hover cover has been brought on to cover the pitch.

From the media centre I can only see one or two umbrellas being opened, and there's still two groups of kids playing Kwik Cricket on a corner of the outfield.

Thanks, Sam. On the subject of lunch...

I'd been forewarned the food for the press corps at Edgbaston was quite special.

Part of today's offerings included a coconut sticky rice dessert served with ginger beer sorbet and rum-soaked pineapple compite.

    Incredible.

Anyway, I'm off to find something to eat. But don't worry (I'm sure none of you were) - Timothy Abraham is going to guide you all through the next couple of hours.

  16. Root on the rise...published at 13:05 British Summer Time 27 July

Midway through that session, Joe Root nipped above Brian Lara in the all-time Test run scoring charts. He will resume after lunch in seventh spot with 11,998 runs. Next up is Kumar Sangakkara who has 12,400.

  17. Lunchpublished at 33 overs

    Eng 157-5

Joe Root and Ben Stokes pop off to re-fuel and they'll be pretty pleased with their morning work. Root is unbeaten on 58, Stokes 48. Their sixth-wicket partnership is currently worth 103.

West Indies were out of the blocks rapidly, picking up the wickets of Ollie Pope and Harry Brook within the first 20 minutes. But they will tuck into their sandwiches full of regret, one suspects.

By way of reminder, Joe Root was struck on the pads by Jayden Seales. The original decision was not out and the West Indies opted not to review. It was the wrong call - replays showed three reds. It has already cost them 55 precious runs.

  18. Eng 156-5published at 32 overs

We are into around the wicket bouncer territory. Stokes is taking them on, whereas Root is ducking and swaying.

  19. Eng 155-5published at 31.3 overs

100 partnership between Stokes and Root arrives via a mis-timed Stokes pull. Just what England needed. Remember, they were 54-5 when these two great pals came together. Much work still to do, but the situation is far less dire now.
