  1. Ball hoop klaxon...published at 12:19 British Summer Time 27 July 2024

And the verdict? Passing through it with ease. Worth a try though, Jason, worth a try.

Couple of catchers at mid-wicket for Stokes here. A few years back, that might have been classed as rare.

But in modern cricket (**Tom Jones voice button pressed**) it's not unusual. In fact, it is pretty standard.

  3. Eng 105-5published at 22 overs

50 partnership up between Root and Stokes for the sixth wicket. Digging England out of a bit of a hole here, albeit the light is still a long, long way away.

Time for Jason Holder. 59 with the bat; a pair of catches; and...

Good point Vic. And given I haven't mentioned it for a while...remember, folks, Joe Root was "out" when he had made a mere tryptic of singles. West Indies did not review the original decision though, thus allowing Root to make his way to a jolly 41. Proving costly so far.

That was the Joe Root factor I reckon because of what happened earlier. I thought they'd put it out of their minds!

  6. Not outpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 27 July 2024

Only needs one look. Flicks the pads so it will be a "not out" and a review lost.

  7. West Indies reviewpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 27 July 2024

For caught behind. Stokes was trying to tickle one down leg-side. It took them ages to decide.

On we go. Joseph to continue. He's coming very wide of the crease to Joe Root - needs to be careful, actually. Couple of slips and a gully.

Lets go back and have a look at that Harry Brook dismissal. Could he have left it? Probably.

  10. drinks break

Drinks for all concerned. Including me...coffee time.

Do we call that an even first hour?

  11. Eng 100-5published at 20.4 overs

Three figures up for England. 62 balls for their first fifty and 62 balls for their second. Consistent...just a shame re: the wickets.

That is basically the first hour done and England have settled down a touch. Root and Stokes both looking "in" now. But I said that about Crawley yesterday...

  13. Eng 92-5published at 19.1 overs

Shot of the day? Yep, we think so here. Checked straight drive with an exaggerated post-stroke pose from Ben Stokes. Very satisfying.

Shamar Joseph back into the attack FYI.

  14. Eng 88-5published at 19 overs

Belting shot from Joe Root. Front dog into position early and then it is all about timing. Four bits.

Another couple takes him to 33.

Jayden Seales gets one to lift at Stokes early on in the over. Then, from the final ball, Stokes plays a sumptuous stroke...straight at Kirk McKenzie in the covers. That will have stung the fingers.

Jamie Smith looking relaxed as he waits his turn to bat.

Nice to see him with an old-school fingerless inner on his right hand.

I remember those well - they were always the thing that never got replaced. They'd live at the bottom of the kit bag and would absolutely pong. I wonder if pros help themselves to new ones or whether they keep the same pair for years?

  17. Eng 80-5published at 17 overs

An over with something in it for fans of both sides. That's what we like, right? Stokes played a lovely cut shot, but then Joseph found the outside of his bat. Could easily have carried to slip.

He's standing quite far back at first slip there. It is a feather-bed sort of pitch, the ball isn't flying through off the edge.

  19. Eng 79-5published at 16.4 overs

Ohhhhh close. Stokes gets a genuine edge when pushing at a drive but it doesn't carry to Kavem Hodge. With the pitch good-to-soft, I reckon he ought to be a step closer.

  20. Eng 79-5published at 16.2 overs

Stokes is up and running. Joseph comes around the wicket to him and offers one right in the #LateCutZone. Nice.
