Summary

  1. Ollie Pope drags on...published at 11:41 British Summer Time 27 July 2024

Here is that Pope dismissal from a little earlier. Pope's head immediately went skyward - he will be gutted with that one.

  2. Eng 74-5published at 16 overs

Tidy from Jayden Seales who has 3 for 33 from eight overs.

  3. Eng 72-5published at 15 overs

Alzarri Joseph into the thick of it for the first time this morning.

As with those who came before him, Joseph is searching for Root's pads. However, he gets one too straight and is tickled away for four.

With his next ball, Joseph overcompensates and Root thrashes him to the point boundary. Root has 25 now... having been out lbw (had the West Indies bothered reviewing) on just three.

  4. Top run-scorers in Test cricketpublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 27 July 2024

With Joe Root moving above Brian Lara into seventh in the all-time Test run-scorers list, here's who is above him.

With this game and three more this summer - and six over the winter - where will he end 2024?

    1. Sachin Tendulkar (Ind) - 15,921
    2. Ricky Ponting (Aus) - 13,378
    3. Jacques Kallis (SA/ICC) - 13,289
    4. Rahul Dravid (Ind/ICC) - 13,288
    5. Sir Alastair Cook (Eng) - 12,472
    6. Kumar Sangakarra (SL) - 12,400
    7. Joe Root (Eng) - 11,954
    8. Brian Lara (WI/ICC) - 11,953
  5. Eng 60-5published at 14 overs

And with that single to end the over, Joe Root goes past a certain Brian Charles Lara in the Test run-scoring charts. Lara made 11,953 of them, and Root is now seventh on the all-time list. Sachin Tendulkar is top with 15,921...gettable.

For all his magnificent cricketing achievements (including 501 on this very ground), for me the best thing Mr Lara ever did was sticking his name on one of THE great computer games on the 1990s. "It's in the air...and safe...and out."

  6. Eng 55-5published at 13 overs

All the fives. Ben Stokes has already left more balls in this innings than Ben Duckett has in his Test career*

*unverified statistic (but I can't be far off)

Consider it bookmarked, Adam. I would cross my fingers but that is not generally considered to be conducive to keyboard strumming...

  9. An opportunity missed...published at 11:23 British Summer Time 27 July 2024

Believe it or not, it could have been an even better opening 20 minutes for the West Indies. Had they gone upstairs on this one, Joe Root would have been watching helplessly on right now. Hindsight and wonderful things.

  10. Eng 54-5published at 12 overs

The dream start for the West Indies.

By the way, Jayden Seales has just reached 50 Test wickets in only his 13th Test. Decent effort that.

Ben Stokes is England's new batter.

That is sensational bowling. The airplane has set off!

Jayden Seales has bowled really well. He was expensive in the first innings at Trent Bridge in the second Test but he's come back well. He's showing a real level of maturity and skill.

    That is a loose shot.

It is the length again - that is the length to bowl on this pitch when the ball is moving a little bit.

England didn't do it yesterday and West Indies have.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.5 overs

    Brook c Da Silva b Seales 2 (Eng 54-5)

And there goes Harry Cherrington Brook. Jayden Seales teases Brook into a drive and Joshua Da Silva takes a simple catch.

Exceptional bowling from Seales. Remember - he spent time down at Hove earlier this summer and it certainly looks like he can handle the Dukes.

  14. Eng 51-4published at 11 overs

Super start to the morning for the West Indies. They will have known that Ollie Pope loves to play his shots, and that approach will always give the bowling side a sniff.

It could have been so much better, though, had they reviewed the LBW shout against Joe Root in the previous over. Still, they have England four down and lead by 231.

    Time for Harry Cherrington Brook.

Look at Ollie Pope's strike-rate of 50 - that has been the best part of West Indies' bowling for me so far. They've controlled the scoring rate and the England batters are now chasing balls to hit.

That has happened a lot in this series. Had Joe Root been given out this would have been a really interesting situation.

That was not a good shot selection to that particular delivery.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 10.5 overs

    Pope b S Joseph 10 (Eng 51-4)

Pope was looking play that ball into the off side but it cramped him for room. An inside edge and the ball crashes into the stumps. The West Indies are delighted.

Now then. Just seen the Hawk-Eye on the Seales LBW appeal. Had the West Indies gone upstairs, Joe Root would have been trudging back up the stairs. An opportunity missed with Root on only three.

  20. Eng 43-3published at 10 overs

Appeal for lbw from Jayden Seales as the ball crashes into Joe Root's pad. The bowler liked it but he was the lone appellant. Joshua Da Silva immediately signalled that it was sliding down the leg side.

A ball later Root tickles one down to fine leg for the day's first boundary.
