Anyway, the cover has zipped back off again - maybe someone just liked playing with the remote.

The players have raced back onto the field, but we're not quite ready, we'll have to wait for someone to re-assemble the stumps.

    Give it a minute...

Incidentally, as a child I used to be utterly terrified by the hokey cokey.

Linking hands and hurling yourself towards one another? It filled me with utter dread.

It was perhaps the start of an uncomfortable relationship with the dancefloor, from the adolescent disco to the provincial nightclub and the wedding wiggle.

It's why I had to turn down Strictly. They booked Darren Gough instead.

    Hmmm. Spoke too soon.

Another slight shower and the hover cover is coming back on. Umbrellas are being opened in the stands.

    Oh, wait a second.

I was just about to tell you about a 16:15 resumption, but the hover cover seems to be doing the hokey cokey - it came off and now it's heading back to the wicket.

The big hover cover is just being taken off and a tractor is currently pulling a rope to clear any excess water off the outfield. The umpires are having a quick chat but we should hopefully be under way again soon.

    Good news!

The side covers are coming off the square at Edgbaston.

Hopefully the hover cover over the wicket will follow soon and we'll get going.

A few highlights from the afternoon session, then.

Ben Stokes reached fifty with his first ball after lunch, before falling to Alzarri Joseph.

Joe Root played fluidly and looked set for a 33rd Test hundred, but Gudakesh Motie struck to dismiss him lbw on 87.

Chris Woakes arrived to partner Jamie Smith and the pair have put on 43 for the eight wicket, with England trailing the West Indies by eight runs going into tea.

  10. rain stops play

Rain delaypublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 27 July

My first update is not a happy one, I'm afraid.

We've got a touch of rain in Birmingham and the covers are on - we won't resume at 16:00 BST.

The rain radar suggests it isn't too serious, hopefully we'll be on soon.

    Thanks Timothy.

    Nicely poised here, I reckon.

I'm off to see what tempting treats might be on offer for tea at Edgbaston.

In my stead is a special helping of Mike Peter, who will guide you through the remainder of the interval and beyond.

An excellent session, overall, for England. Joe Root (87) initially spearheaded the recovery before Jamie Smith (57*) took over.

Chris Woakes (21*) has look in good touch as well.

After an hour this morning, the West Indies would have thought 'finally we're on top in a Test. We've got the momentum'. But England have managed to wrestle it back brilliantly.

There has been a bit of a deflation of the mood out there for the West Indies. It's clouded over and it's a bit chillier now - that won't help either!

  15. England 274-7 at teapublished at 59 overs

Chris Woakes and Jamie Smith nudge and nurdle Alzarri Joseph into the gaps to reach the tea interval.

Joseph beats the outside edge of Smith's bat with the penultimate ball of the session but England are able to reach the break without further alarm.

    England trail by eight runs.

Thankfully whatever was on fire near the ground appears to have been put out by the looks of things. The skies are grey again, though, as West Indies search for wickets.

Jamie Smith prods at a full ball from Jason Holder to pick up a single through backward point. Watchful from he and Chris Woakes with the tea interval just around the corner.

Beach balls are being bounced around by the fans in the Eric Hollies Stand, followed by pantomime boos whenever a strait-laced steward refuses to return anything which drops over the advertising hoardings.

Alzarri Joseph into the attack for West Indies, and he has Jamie Smith waggling his bat at one outside off stump which brings encouraging chirps from the West Indies slip cordon.

This ball is now swinging a touch for the West Indies. They desperately want this wicket, though.

England find themselves only 18 runs behind and close to a first-innings lead. That did not seem likely during the first hour today.

Fifty for Smithpublished at 55.3 overs

The fans in the Eric Hollies Stand could be described as well oiled as we head towards the tea interval.

Jamie Smith gets them on their feet as he brings up his second Test half-century with a crisp on drive, all along the carpet, for four off Jason Holder.
