The whole of Edgbaston stands and applauds Jamie Smith.

He'll have another opportunity before too long to get that first Test century.

It could be a match-defining innings because England were in trouble.

It just completely died in the pitch and he was through the shot too early.

    Smith b S Joseph 95 (Eng 337-8)

    Nooooooooo!

Jamie Smith has gone. Joseph took the pace off of that one, it keeps a tad low, and bowls him. Sport can be cruel sometimes.

Ben Stokes, sat on the England balcony, throws his head backward, and Smith trudges off.

Edgbaston gives him the ovation that knock deserves. It could well prove a match-defining hand.

One suspects Smith will get another shot or three at a Test century in the coming years...

  3. Eng 337-7published at 69 overs

Fun fact: England have had only had three eighth-wicket stands worth 100+ v West Indies in Test cricket. Chris Woakes has been involved in two of them.

  4. Eng 337-7published at 68.4 overs

Smith is using those dancing feet again. Just a single. Moves him to 95.

Jamie Smith is making me nervous here! He's coming down with intent.

  6. Eng 336-7published at 68.2 overs

    He might...

Smith moves his feet to the first couple.

  7. Eng 336-7published at 68 overs

Smith nurdles a single to third. It keeps him the strike, and moves him to 94. He wouldn't dare would he?! I think we all know the answer to that one...

  8. Eng 331-7published at 67.1 overs

Thanks Mike. And what a shot to write about first up. Jamie Smith is purring now. An elegant flick off his legs moves him into the 90s. Nervous? I doubt it. I really doubt it.

Brings up the 100 partnership, too. 114 balls for those runs - the first 50 of them took 75 deliveries. Motoring along.

  9. Eng 327-7published at 67 overs

The England batters exchange a couple of off side singles, before Motie finishes his over with three dot balls to Woakes.

Right, time for me to love you and leave you, here's Sam Dalling to take you through to the close.

  10. Eng 325-7published at 66 overs

Jayden Seales continues, although he has to stop for the now customary mid-session ball change.

Will the West Indies have more luck with the replacement? Maybe not - Smith finds the boundary with another lofted... guess what.... pull shot.

  11. Eng 316-7published at 65 overs

    Here he is, Vic!

The West Indies spinner comes on for the expensive Alzarri Joseph and immediately tightens things up.

Just a single from the over, a Smith nudge down towards long-off.

Where is Motie? He should have started after tea. It will be tricky for him now because Smith, in particular, has got the flavour.

The lead could rattle up quite quickly if West Indies don't break this partnership quite quickly.

  14. Eng 315-7published at 64 overs

    Smith 80, Woakes 39

England are rattling along now - two more fours from this Seales over as Woakes times a drive beautifully through the covers and Smith brings out the pull shot again to reach the ropes at mid-wicket.

The home side have scored 41 runs from the five overs after tea, and the West Indies look a little lost.

That is a magnificent shot! Jamie Smith is going on his merry way. It is brilliant batting and he's taking Alzarri Joseph apart.

Alzarri Joseph has lost it a little bit at the moment. He's got a field that suggests he should be bowling length and outside off stump but he's still bowling short.

  17. Eng 304-7published at 63 overs

    Pitch it up, Alzarri!

England have enjoyed bringing out the pull shot this afternoon and the West Indies seamer offers Jamie Smith plenty of opportunity to play it in this over.

He finds the boundary with three of them, two towards mid-wicket either side of a swivel shot down to the fine leg ropes.

Another adds a single to bring up England's 300, before Chris Woakes attempts a pull of his own and top edges over the keeper for four more.

    17 from the over.

  18. Eng 287-7published at 62 overs

England's batters work Seales around for three singles.

How far can this pair extend this nascent lead?

  19. Eng 284-7published at 61 overs

Woakes pulls Alzarri Joseph for four down past long leg, before England bring up a succession of landmarks in the back half of the over.

From the fourth delivery, another Woakes pull adds a single and moves the partnership to 50 from 75 balls.

From the fifth and sixth, dabs into the off side draw England level with, and then past, the West Indies first innings total.

I am Ben Foakes' biggest fan, but Jamie Smith just looks so at home at Test level, like Brook, Root and Pietersen before him in the past 20 years. His keeping looks significantly better than Prior Bairstow and Buttler, all of whom I've loved in the team too. Bravo Ben and Brendon.
