Summary

  1. Eng 258-7published at 55 overs

There's a plumes of black smoke billowing into the air in the distance from to the right of the pavilion as you look at it.

Something is on fire. It's just starting to drift over the ground.

Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes pick up a single apiece of Jayden Seales' 15th over.

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

It is awkward to feel what a good total is in the third innings. Is there wear in the wicket? It's difficult to set a total. Always good when you get a good start.

  3. Eng 256-7published at 54 overs

    Trail by 26 runs

Jason Holder is thrown the ball and the West Indies all-rounder manages to hit the right notes almost straight away, teasing the ball outside the edge of Jamie Smith's bat.

It doesn't look like Chris Woakes is approaching any of these runs with trepidation - I think we got fed some duff information by Stuart Broad. Stuart was in one of those moods!

If it was too bad, we wouldn't be seeing Woakes out there now. They'd have sent Gus Atkinson out.

  5. Eng 255-7published at 53 overs

It's a pleasant temperature but Chris Woakes is wearing an England cable knit jumper. Another classy drive brings him two more.

A couple of balls later and Jayden Seales beats the outside edge of Jamie Smith's bat.

England now trail by 28 runs. Can they go on to build some sort of first-innings lead?

That's as good as it gets - it's a Joe Root-esque cover drive. Gorgeous. They don't get any better than that from Chris Woakes.

  7. Eng 252-7published at 52 overs

Here's how Joe Root was dismissed a few moments ago. Take the partisanship out of it for a moment, and that's a fine piece of bowling from Gudakesh Motie.

Chris Woakes, meanwhile, is down on one knee driving Shamar Joseph down the ground in style. A couple of balls later the Warwickshire all-rounder repeats the trick.

    A productive over for England.

Beautiful bit of timing from Woakes. No real effort.

  9. Eng 243-7published at 51 overs

The sun bursts through after a period of grey gloriously illuminating Edgbaston's green sward.

Chris Woakes his here and he strokes a pleasing cover drive off Jayden Seales to the fence from the fourth delivery of the over.

That was easy on the eye.

  10. Eng 236-7published at 50 overs

    Trail by 46 runs

I'll come clean. I had already prepared a Joe Root hundred post, and my colleague Sam Dalling was absolutely aghast.

Not least because Root was on 87 - 13 out - to which I protested that was only relevant in the context of matches against Australia.

With hindsight, however... Full responsibility accepted for jinxing it.

He's got him again has Motie!

I don't quite know how Joe Root missed the one at Lord's and I don't quite know how he has missed that one. It didn't really turn - it just sort of skidded on. It was just a little quicker, perhaps an under spinner. I think it's done him for a bit of pace.

Root held England's innings together but he's gone on the dreaded 87.

  12. wicket

    Root lbw b Motie 87 (Eng 231-7)

There's a collective groan around Edgbaston as Joe Root is trapped plumb in front by Gudakesh Motie.

Root lurches forward attempting to defend but it's a slight misjudgement from the England batter as the delivery from Motie skids on and hits him low on the back pad.

The 33-year-old is done by the arm ball from Motie and knows he's toast.

Root does not even bother to chat with Jamie Smith at the non-striker's end, turns on his heels, and walks back to the pavilion.

  13. Eng 231-6published at 48 overs

Shamar Joseph, doubtless sucking on a few lozenges between overs after his recent flu, bustles into the

Final delivery of the over and Jamie Smith has a bit of nothing waft outside off stump and the ball skids through to Joshua Da Silva. Joseph puts his hands over his nose. He thought that was close.

    Carlos Brathwaite

Jamie Smith is finding ways to score, and that is why I think he has been selected ahead of Ben Foakes. Foakes would have come in and brought control, but Smith has come in and taken the game to the West Indies.

  16. drinks break

Eng 228-6 at drinkspublished at 47 overs

England up the ante as Jamie Smith decides to go on the offensive to Gudakesh Motie, twice sweeping him square for four.

Just over an hour after lunch and drinks are brought on to the field.

  17. Smith smiting sixes...published at 14:39 British Summer Time 27 July

Here is that Jamie Smith stroke that had Vic Marks purring. Smith was on just nine at the time, and there were two catchers out for the miscue. You get the impression that not taking it on didn't even cross Smith's mind...

  18. Eng 218-6published at 46 overs

Shamar Joseph, who has been under bowled so far having just recovered from a bout of flu, is thrown the ball by Kraigg Brathwaite.

Joe Root is content to play him cautiously, as England pick up three runs from the over.

Root inspects his bat at the end of the over after hearing a noise he doesn't like the sound of.

What a player he is. You can see he almost got there too soon. He just waited and slapped it on top of the bounce. Cover had no chance.

  20. Eng 215-6published at 45 overs

Jamie Smith's clean striking is one of the reasons he caught the eye of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes.

Gudakesh Motie drops one a little wider and Smith crisply cuts it away to the boundary for four.

England have recovered from the loss of Ben Stokes and are purring again.
