Summary

  • Duckett (49 not out) anchors Phoenix to victory

  • Klaasen top-scores for Originals with 34

  • Both teams already eliminated

  1. Phoenix 33-1published at 75 balls

    Target 110

It's advantage Phoenix at the end of the powerplay. They need 77 runs off 75 balls and Joe Clarke is flying on 14 from six deliveries.

Time for a bit of spin. Here comes Tom Hartley.

  2. Phoenix 32-1published at 76 balls

    Target 110

Okay, that was a bit reckless, Joe.

It's pretty much a run-a-ball from here and you've already got three boundaries from the set. Put your big swing away.

Not many batters have timed the ball on this surface today. What we have seen is that the longer you bat, the easier it gets.

Joe Clarke has been doing well so far.

  4. Phoenix 32-1published at 77 balls

    Target 110

Joe Clarke is in a hurry to complete this chase.

He's dispatched Josh Tongue for three successive fours to race to 13 (4). He's timing it beautifully and toying with the field. Nothing reckless about his striking so far.

  5. Phoenix 20-1published at 80 balls

    Target 110

Well, Originals have made a breakthrough in the powerplay but they'll want at least one more to really unsettle Phoenix.

That one was a cross-seam delivery and it was there to be hit. A simple catch for Jos Buttler, who looked like he dropped the ball he threw it so quickly into the air!

My grandad would have described that particular shot as "needless".

Will Smeed was frustrated by the first two deliveries of the set, twice picking out Heinrich Klaasen in the covers, before drilling Baker down the ground for four.

He then goes for a big heave-ho but can only edge through to Jos Buttler, departing for 13.

    A silly shot.

  8. Phoenix 15-0published at 85 balls

    Target 110

The important thing for Birmingham Phoenix is not to panic. The required rate is only a shade above a run-a-ball.

Ben Duckett loves the cut shot. He is able to just guide the ball to the boundary.

It is crucial to have not lost a wicket in those first 10 balls for Birmingham Phoenix.

  10. Phoenix 12-0published at 88 balls

    Target 110

Right on cue, Ben Duckett cuts Josh Tongue away for four.

  11. Phoenix 8-0published at 90 balls

Four scoring shots, including a boundary, and six dot balls to show for Sonny Baker's 10-ball set.

Will Ben Duckett and Will Smeed start to get itchy feet? Neither player has found runs particularly easy to come by during the tournament.

  12. Phoenix 6-0published at 93 balls

    Target 110

The first boundary of the innings! A top edge from Will Smeed flies over the wicketkeeper's head and goes for a one-bounce four.

Bowler Sonny Baker smiles as he walks back to his mark.

  13. Phoenix 2-0published at 95 balls

    Target 110

A tight opening set from Sonny Baker, who finds a bit of swing and also brings out his yorker in the opening five balls of the innings.

A single apiece for Ben Duckett and Will Smeed.

It looks Baker is going to bowl another five.

  14. Phoenix 1-0published at 99 balls

    Target 110

Will Smeed kicks off Birmingham Phoenix's chase with a single.

Manchester Originals have a bowling unit with a lot of pace behind the ball. Whereas Birmingham Phoenix took all pace off.

Originals used that at Trent Bridge and it did not work - the quick bowlers got carted. They may have to go to the slow bowlers early on.

The players have made their way back onto the field.

Birmingham Phoenix are chasing 110, with out of form openers Ben Duckett and Will Smeed kicking things off.

Sonny Baker, who took a hat-trick against Northern Superchargers earlier in the tournament, will open the bowling for Manchester Originals.

So, it hasn't been a vintage day for batting at Old Trafford.

Earlier today, Manchester Originals failed to chase 112 in the women's competition and were left to rue a couple of missed opportunities in the field.

Manchester Originals men have set Birmingham Phoenix an underwhelming target of 110, but will Phoenix's own fielding mistakes come back to haunt them? There were almost too many dropped catches and misfields to count!

  18. 'Slog it'published at 19:20 BST 24 August

Benny Howell of Birmingham PhoenixImage source, Getty Images

Birmingham Phoenix bowler Benny Howell speaking on Sky Sports: "It was a tricky wicket so time will tell how well we did. The bowlers bowled well, we used all of our slower balls and spinners so we will see."

On his knuckle balls: "The pitch was a bit sticky and a bit two-paced. I went with the knuckle ball and they came out well."

On advice for the batters: "Slog it."

142 is the lowest score successfully defended at Old Trafford in the men's Hundred, while 113 is the lowest successfully defended score overall in the men's Hundred (by Oval Invincibles vs Welsh Fire, Cardiff 2024).
