Too wide from Gus Atkinson and Nathan Smith hammers it away through the covers for four.

A brutal drive from the Kiwi all-rounder.

Given the depth of my mourning at Lord's this summer I never thought I'd say this... but we appear not to be missing Jimmy.

Three dot balls end Chris Woakes' over but there is no doubt Glenn Phillips and Nathan Smith want to be very positive in their approach.

    Back-to-back boundaries for Glenn Phillips.

The first is punched crisply back down the ground before he thrashes the next away through backward point.

    The counter-attack is under way...

Bowling change for England. Chris Woakes is on for Brydon Carse after the latter's short but successful spell to start the morning.

I fancy he might be back from the other end before long.

Brydon Carse has had a lot of success in this series going a touch fuller after hitting slightly back of a length the ball before - on average his wicket-taking deliveries are 1.1 metre fuller than the ball prior to them.

Average length of wicket-taking deliveries - 6.9 metres

Average length of delivery prior to dismissal - 8.0 metres

  7. NZ 113-7published at 33 overs

It looks like this New Zealand pair are going to try and put a bit of pressure back on the England bowlers.

It's Glenn Phillips' turn to go on the attack, smoking the ball through point for four.

Gus Atkinson comes back well, though, with just a single from the next four balls.

  8. 'Feels like New Zealand are miles behind the game'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

    Steven Finn
Former England fast bowler on the TMS podcast

New Zealand have had a funny couple of months.

They've achieved the greatest thing in their cricket history with their 3-0 win in India and you are wondering how much energy they used to achieve that.

It is hard to play at that same intensity and there has been lapses in concentration so far in this series that you wouldn't normally associate with a New Zealand team.

They'll be disappointed with the way they lost wickets in a cluster at the end of the day one. It feels like they are miles behind the game.

    NZ 108-7published at 32 overs

Nathan Smith is going on the offensive here!

Banged in short by Carse and the New Zealander all-rounder pulls him over mid-wicket for six.

That was a very clean connection.

  10. NZ 102-7published at 31.3 overs

    Trail by 178

Brydon Carse now has 4-35 and is on the hunt for more.

Replays showed I did him a disservice with the Will O'Rourke dismissal, it wasn't just full and straight, the ball nipped back a touch to beat the inside edge.

Much clearer movement to start this over as he cuts Glenn Phillips in half before Nathan Smith jams the bat down on a very full ball and gets four down the ground.

Carse is such a good find. I know he’s come in later in his career but this guy is unbelievable. Utter quality.

Glenn Phillips came in and got off the mark between those two wickets.

He'll now be tasked with batting with the lower order. England aren't quite into the tail yet given Nathan Smith is a bowling all-rounder.

But no doubt the Black Caps are in big trouble here and it almost gets worst as Gus Atkinson goes past Smith's edge.

  13. 'Carse really encouraging for England'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

    Steven Finn
Former England fast bowler on TNT Sports

Brydon Carse has been a real find this winter.

He's really enjoyed bowling on these pitches and he's just riding the crest of the wave. It's such a beautiful feeling as a bowler when you feel in control of everything, you can just run up and everything snaps into place and you're getting that kiss and bounce.

It won't happen for ever and it won't happen for his entire career - there will clearly be times when he finds it tougher than he is now - but the way he's settled into international cricket and getting the best players out and troubling them all the time is really encouraging for England, especially looking forward to 12 months' time in Australia.

Two in the over for Brydon Carse!

Full and straight from the England quick and the ball thuds into Will O'Rourke's back pad.

It look very adjacent and the nightwatcher doesn't bother to review. He departs for a 26-ball duck.

This is the first time Will O'Rourke has operated as a nightwatcher having never batted higher than number 10 previously in his first-class career.

While he only has 80 runs in his 31 first-class innings so far, he does boast an impressive dismissal rate of 38 balls per-dismissal, boosted by finishing not out in 21 innings.

It doesn't matter how settled you are when you get a ball like this!

It is an absolute beauty from Brydon Carse, squaring up Tom Blundell to hit the top of off.

A carbon copy of the delivery to bowl Kane Williamson last evening - but this time the bowler has kept his foot behind the line.

Blundell thought he was right in behind it with a solid defensive shot but the line was perfect and there was just a fraction of movement off the seam to beat the bat.

It doesn't get much better than that for a seam bowler.

  17. NZ 95-5published at 29.2 overs

Well, Tom Blundell seems to have got himself settled!

After driving smartly through the covers for two the ball previous, he pulls firmly behind square for four after Brydon Carse's short ball didn't get up as much as the bowler wanted.

New Zealand are in trouble and are going to have to scrape as close as they can to England's score. I think England's 280 was par on that wicket, but to get New Zealand five down they have bowled brilliantly.

It's really up to Tom Blundell to bat with the lower order and tail then look to get within a 100 runs or so to give themselves a chance. That being said, an hour of England batting positively and Bazball that lead is suddenly up to 220 or 230 before they even know it. If that happens they will be heavy favourites.

  19. NZ 89-5published at 29 overs

    Blundell 10, O'Rourke 0

Gus Atkinson goes past Will O'Rourke's outside edge after Tom Blundell works a single midway through the over.

Steady start to the day all round with everyone trying to work their way into it.

  20. NZ 88-5published at 28 overs

    Trail by 192

Brydon Carse has nightwatcher Will O'Rourke in his sights and seems determined to target the stumps.

An attempted yorker whistles just past off stump before an inside edge saves O'Rourke from being plumb lbw.

The big fast bowler survives, though. He's faced 22 balls without scoring but, he's doing a good job for his side.
