Summary

  1. New Zealand reviewpublished at 2.2 overs

Swing for Tim Southee and he hits Jacob Bethell on the back leg.

Given not out but Tom Latham reviews.

I thought he hit it, if I'm honest, but we'll see...

  2. Eng 10-1published at 2 overs

    Lead by 165

Jacob Bethell gets off the mark with a single through gully before Ben Duckett fiddles at a ball wide of off to end the over.

Another successful one for Matt Henry early in the innings. New Zealand need more of that.

Matt Henry gets Zak Crawley yet again.

On the pads and middled by Crawley... but into the hands of Devon Conway at mid-wicket.

Slightly unfortunate for the England opener but it was in the air and given his luck again New Zealand, that was always likely to be a big risk.

I know Gus Atkinson has joined Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali in having a Test hat-trick and a Test century, are there any others in that list?

  6. Eng 8-0published at 1 over

    Lead by 163

Another booming drive from Crawley to end the over but this one is straight to the cover fielder.

Some statement of intent from the England opener and it led to New Zealand taking a slip out two balls into the innings to put a man on the fence.

  7. Eng 8-0published at 0.2 overs

    Lead by 163

    Same again from Zak Crawley!

Four more. Neither have been bad balls from Tim Southee.

  8. Eng 4-0published at 0.1 overs

    Lead by 159

Zak Crawley drives the first ball of the innings imperiously through the covers for four!

New Zealand are in a huddle on the outfield and after 20 wickets have gone down in less than three and a half sessions of this match so far, they'll be hoping for a few more pronto.

Traditionally, this is a pitch that gets better to bat on as the game wears on but the home side will still need a very good bowling effort to get back into this one.

To answer Tristan from Hook Norton's question (see 22:46 GMT)...

Gus Atkinson is only the eighth bowler to take a 'perfect' Test hat-trick (bowled, caught, lbw).

Stuart Broad took the last one prior to this against South Africa at Trent Bridge in 2011.

Well, I feel like it was a good use of your luck, Nathan.

The first Test hat-trick at the Basin Reserve as well. Another record for Gus Atkinson.

I just happened to flick the cricket on as Atkinson ran up for the first ball. Used up all my luck. Should have bought a lottery ticket.

    What a morning for England.

They take the last five New Zealand wickets for just 39 runs in a little over 40 minutes.

Gus Atkinson ends with 4-31 - and a brilliant hat-trick. Brydon Carse took 4-46 and there was a wicket apiece for Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes.

England lead by 155 on first innings. That's a very handy lead on this surface.

A proper hat trick as well. Caught. Bowled. LBW. Not many of those I'm sure.

Gus Atkinson's hat-trick is the 15th by an Englishman in Test cricket with Moeen Ali taking the last against South Africa at The Oval in 2017.

    HAT-TRICK!

Fantastic from Gus Atkinson to wrap up the innings. That lbw was stone dead.

It was a bizarre situation with the players walking off before ball-tracking even came.

The review does slightly take away from the moment but given how plumb Tim Southee was, England were able to confidently celebrate in the moment.

  17. New Zealand reviewpublished at 34.5 overs

It's not short. It's full and Tim Southee looks to be plumb lbw!

    Given but reviewed.

I think this is a hat-trick for Gus Atkinson!

Gus Atkinson is on a hat-trick!

Banged in short by the England fast bowler, well directed at the body and Matt Henry can only try and fend it off.

He does but sends the ball straight to Ben Duckett at gully.

  20. wicket

    Gus Atkinson hits back!

Super lines from the England seamer, Nathan Smith tries to leave just outside off but the extra bounce takes the ball into his gloves and back onto the stumps.

Two more for England to get to wrap up this innings, New Zealand still trail by 155.
