Summary

  1. Eng 281-3published at 58 overs

    Lead by 436

Tidy over from Matt Henry but there's nothing in there to cause England any alarm.

Three singles taken as the tourists continue to try and grind New Zealand down on a pitch that, while still offering a bit occasionally, does now seem to be getting flatter.

New Zealand change the field for Glenn Phillips with slip going to leg slip and everything set up for a very straight line.

So the off-spinner promptly bowls a short ball wide of off... easily punched through point by Harry Brook and it takes some good fielding in the deep to prevent a boundary.

Three singles follow so it's six from the over. All very straightforward for England.

  4. Not outpublished at 56 overs

    Eng 272-3

New Zealand are out of reviews.

Joe Root missed it and the ball flicked his thigh.

A dot ball ends the over.

England take five from Glenn Phillips' over without breaking sweat.

Harry Brook hits over short fine leg for four as the spinner loses his line down the leg side and then pushes a single long-off to keep strike.

For those already looking ahead to the New Zealand chase, they are now looking at what would be a Test record to win this match.

By the time England are done, it's likely to require something well in excess of the current record of 418, achieved by West Indies against Australia.

  8. Eng 266-3published at 54 overs

    Lead by 421

Top-edged pull from Joe Root and it goes a fair way up... but lands a couple of metres short of the fine-leg fielder.

It's been that kind of day for New Zealand but a good start to the spell for Matt Henry.

England are dealing in singles at the moment and take four of them in the over.

Big dilemma for England after this series. With Bethell and Pope in the runs and Jamie Smith almost certain to come back into the side, it will be interesting to see who will be left out. This is assuming Stokes and McCullum don’t go completely rogue and pick 8 batsman.

Glenn Phillips is back on to bowl his off-spin and the second of three singles in the over brings up the fifty partnership.

Joe Root and Harry Brook seem content just to keep batting for the time being.

  11. Eng 259-3published at 52 overs

Four from Nathan Smith's over, including two pulled into the gap by Joe Root.

England are going along nicely and, while the run-rate is a fraction under five, they are not rushing.

If a declaration is in their thinking, it doesn't look to be imminent.

More aggression from Harry Brook as he charges Will O'Rourke and hits up and over extra cover.

Not timed but it lands safely and he gets two before pushing through mid-on for three more.

O'Rourke's frustrations continue as he beats Joe Root with a beauty just outside off. Very good ball but no nick this time.

New Zealand are trying to keep Joe Root and Harry Brook on their toes with Will O'Rourke bowling the short stuff but Nathan Smith sticking to a more conventional pitched-up approach.

Smith's latest is a decent over but England tick over with three singles from it.

Will O'Rourke has bowled 68% of his deliveries at over 140 kph (87 mph), the most by any bowler in this series.

The next best is Brydon Carse, with just 14%.

Harry Brook pulls again and this time gets four. He didn't look to be in the best position for the shot but the timing was immaculate.

The Yorkshireman tries again next ball and this one comes off the back of the bat and loops over Tom Blundell for a single.

Will O'Rourke is sticking with the bouncer barrage and it's Joe Root's turn to take it on with a mistimed pull shot, in front of square, for two.

That takes the lead to 400.

Happy birthday, Eoghan! What better way to start your fourth decade than receiving regular updates on Joe Root and Harry Brook piling on the runs while you're out.

And pile on the runs they continue to do with Brook unfurling a lovely cover drive for four before getting rather fortunate as he's through a pull shot too soon and nearly chips to mid-on.

Harry Brook seems to have decided he has seen enough and wants to accelerate.

He advances to Will O'Rourke and tries to hammer the ball over the covers, gets a thick outside edge but over the slips for four.

That lead is getting ever closer to 400.
