Summary

  1. Eng 353-7published at 87 overs

Sri Lanka bring back Prabath Jayasuriya's spin to stem the tide of late evening runs.

He concedes a couple of singes - prior to that, Sri Lanka had conceded 36 from the first six overs of the new ball.

Gus Atkinson's control has impressed me. It hasn't surprised me really but he can't have played this well before?

He's stayed in his bubble, and hasn't changed his way of batting.

The runs are coming quickly and this can happen with the new ball.

Sri Lanka have got a lot of work to do if they are going to find a way to get ahead of the game.

  4. Eng 351-7published at 86 overs

Potts angles Asitha to the third boundary, before an Atkinson two to mid-wicket brings up England's 350.

From 216-6, this has been an excellent lower-order recovery by England.

I do agree with Adam and Arthur, but you can't help feel that Root left some runs out there. He could have easily been the not out batsman and maybe even got to 200.

No fuss, no frills, just bang over square leg.

  7. 6 runs

    Eng 343-7published at 85 overs

    Pow!

Having already crashed Kumara through the covers for four, Atkinson lofts his penultimate delivery for six over square leg.

He moves to 65 from 72 - his first-class top score is 91.

Arthur @ 18:06 is spot on. Root has once again been incredible and these people saying his shot to get out was ‘inexcusable’ need to cheer up a bit. The guy is allowed to have fun and take some risks on 143, I am 100% sure Stokes and McCullum will be pleased with him.

Swing, bounce and nip from Asitha Fernando. We haven't seen much of that today.

  10. Eng 332-7published at 84 overs

Handy over from Asitha, sending a couple of deliveries past the edge of Matty Potts' bat and seeing another inside-edged onto the pads.

We've got just under fifteen minutes left in the day.

Today has seen the least amount of swing in the first 80 overs of first innings of Tests at Lord's since 2005.

There have been 37 innings in that time.

Potts just stands still and says, "bring it on!"

    Go and fetch it.

  13. Eng 331-7published at 83 overs

New ball, no fear for Matty Potts.

He takes consecutive fours off Kumara, seeing a wafty drive reach the ropes at deep third and then muscly another boundary through long-on.

    I would say so, yes.

You look at every batter, probably minus Brook, has got themselves out.

    Is this score below-par?

It hasn't done much all day in terms of the pitch or the movement through the air. I'd still say England are ahead of the game, but it has looked like a brilliant day to bat.

  16. Eng 322-7published at 82 overs

Asitha Fernando replaces Rathnayake to get his go with the new ball.

Potts welcomes him by clouting his opening delivery through point for four.

People need to relax when Root gets out ramping. He just dug us out of a hole batting diligently all day and wants to have a bit of fun, which is the point of sport anyway. I remember that KP switch hit against Sri Lanka in 2006 so clearly. Have no idea if we won that Test match or not though.

    Arthur in New York.

Pietersen's switch hit for six was off Murali no less!

For the record, England did win that Test at Edgbaston by six wickets.

  18. Eng 316-7published at 81 overs

Potts ensures Kumara doesn't get a maiden with the new ball, working his final ball into the leg side for a single.

Here's that rather unusual Joe Root dismissal.

I suppose we like these when they come off...

  20. new ball

    New ballpublished at 80.1 overs

    Eng 315-7

Sri Lanka ask for the new ball immediately and Lahiru Kumara returns to take it.

Potts fends off the opening delivery.
