Atkinson unleashes a glorious off-drive off Rathnayake's penultimate delivery to bring up the half-century off 61 deliveries, a fantastic lower-order contribution.

He attempts an expansive pull shot from the following ball but gets nowhere near it.

Joe Root is England's greatest batsman. And his innings today has been beautiful to watch. But that shot was absolutely inexcusable.

Alternatively, England could see this as a huge opportunity.

Have a swing, and if you lose your wickets, you get Sri Lanka's openers in for a very difficult 20 minutes.

Sri Lanka have got to see this as an opportunity to mop up the tail.

  9. Eng 308-7published at 78 overs

New batter Matty Potts sees out the remainder of Rathnayake's over, giving the Sri Lanka seamer a wicket maiden.

Root's dismissal meant that his partnership with Atkinson didn't quite make the hundred mark, closing on 92 from 18.3 overs.

He tried to ramp it over the slip cordon and just lobbed it to gully. It's not the shot which was needed - where did that come from? It was a nothing delivery.

    Root c Nissanka b Rathnayake 143 (Eng 308-7)

    Out attempting the ramp!

Looking well set in the evening light, Joe Root decides to try something a little funky.

He attempts to lift Rathnayake's delivery over the slip cordon, but there's no pace on the delivery and he ends up just offering some catching practice for Pathum Nissanka in the cordon.

Root departs for 143. Not sure that was necessary, to be honest.

  12. Eng 308-6published at 77 overs

Root and Atkinson exchange singles from Jayasuriya's 23rd over.

England are going at exactly four an over - 4 x 77 = 308. Remember that if anyone happens to unleash a times table test on you.

The problem for Sri Lanka is that Joe Root seems determined to make this a really big one.

  14. Eng 306-6published at 76 overs

Change of ends for Rathnayake now as he replaces Kamindu Mendis, who'd gone for 27 from his three overs.

Root works him backward of square to move into the 140s.

This is an outstanding partnership - and England needed it because at 216-6, it could have ended quickly. The way Gus Atkinson has approached his innings has made it easier for Joe Root.

    Thanks Ffion.

Change of ends for Prabath Jayasuriya as he comes on to replace Rathnayake.

Atkinson flicks him away off his pads for three to bring up England's 300.

That's 101 runs in 21.4 overs since tea.

The Sri Lankan spinners after tea have bowled some pies. That sat up, he's a tall boy, he had all the time in the world to climb into it.

    Shot!

Gus Atkinson is causing Sri Lanka plenty of problems here, which isn't ideal for them when the other batter they're bowling at is Joe Root.

He slams another short ball from Kamindu Mendis into the stands for six, a lovely way for me to end my live-texting stint and leave you in the hands of Mike Peter for the final hour.

Sri Lanka need to keep going here. Bit of sloppy fielding - they were right on it until just after tea, then there was this Atkinson partnership. They're just slipping from their high standards.
