Summary

  1. Eng 287-6published at 73 overs

Short again, pulled for four again by Joe Root.

The run-rate is creeping up at the same time Sri Lanka's body language drops. There are some tired bowlers out there.

They're not used to back-to-back Tests and that's why it's even more incredible that they chose to bowl first. Another day of rest (if they could've batted the day) would have been gratefully received by the seamers.

  2. Eng 283-6published at 72 overs

Sri Lanka have got to work very hard in this last hour or so, to drag things back.

They have bowled very well considering how batting-friendly the pitch has been but they're in danger of wasting that positivity.

Kamindu Mendis hasn't done well. He needs to sort his length, too easy for Joe Root, he's going to put those away all day.

  4. Eng 282-6published at 71.1 overs

    Part-time spinner, same result.

Too short, and punished for four by Root. Wouldn't be bowling there to a bloke who's on 128!

  5. drinks break

    Eng 278-6published at 71 overs

Just one from Asitha Fernando's over, and that takes us to drinks.

A good passage of play for England, with Joe Root making his way past 100 and Gus Atkinson playing a very useful hand with his 31* from 37 balls.

Daniel Owens: We really are witnessing greatness every time Joe Root comes into bat. Exceptional player, outstanding talent and many more records left to be broken!

  7. Eng 277-6published at 70 overs

Joe Root just keeps doing what Joe Root does best.

Reverse sweep, four off Kamindu Mendis' part-time spin.

    Easy.

Gus has got a smile on his face, which you don't see often. He enjoyed that one.

  9. Eng 264-6published at 69 overs

    Root 116, Atkinson 29

It hasn't been a great hour for Sri Lanka.

Too full again, and Gus Atkinson drills it for four with a cover drive that Root himself would admire.

The partnership is now worth 48.

It looks like he's enjoying himself after the 12 dot balls on 99. Now he's looking to unfurl some beautiful cover drives.

  11. Eng 258-6published at 68 overs

Lovely way to end the over.

Joe Root adds four more to his total with a glorious drive through the covers.

    He's kicking on now.

How far is Root away from being in everyone’s all-time Test XI and entering into the GOAT debate? I’d argue if he averaged over 50 until the next Ashes and proceeded to have a Cook 2010-11 type tour then he’d surely be there.

I've been watching his movements all summer. There was a time in India, especially when Bumrah bowled, where he lost his movement. Against spin, he's always been a genius but this summer his movement against the seamers has been spot on, like poetry.

  19. Eng 238-6published at 65 overs

Sri Lanka did get rid of Chris Woakes early in the session but they need to get these last four wickets sharpish, if they are to justify the decision to bowl first today.

Gus Atkinson has made a positive start, slashing four more through the covers with way too much width on offer.
