The only change in England's XI from Old Trafford is Olly Stone coming in for the injured Mark Wood, though he won't be in action straight away after the result of the toss.

Stone, 30, has only played three Tests in a career that has also been cruelly impacted by injuries, playing his most recent Test against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 2021.

Those injuries included four stress fractures in his back, and it has been a long road to recovery for the Nottinghamshire seamer.

"It’s obviously a special place,” he said of Lord's. "My debut [against Ireland in 2019] is the only four or five-day game I’ve played here.

"To come back and be here this week is very special and it’s very exciting to get going."

I'm pretty stunned Sri Lanka have just done that.

  4. Postpublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 29 August

England captain Ollie Pope: "We'd have had a bat, so we're happy. They say to look up here before you look down.

"Olly [Stone] has worked so hard to get back to here and he's buzzing to pull the shirt back on.

"We've got slightly different conditions, bit more traditionally English and probably a quicker outfield as well."

  5. Postpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 29 August

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva: "We're going to have a bowl. There's always swing in the first hour.

"Nissanka's been in good form in white-ball cricket. Hopefully he's going to continue. We have to get 20 wickets to win, Kumara's a good option.

"The game plan will be the same, but we have to execute better than in Manchester."

  6. Sri Lanka win the toss and bowlpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 29 August

    Interesting!

It's a sunny day, looks like a good pitch but Sri Lanka have stuck England in first at Lord's.

Unsurprisingly, Ollie Pope says he'd have had a bat, so England are happy.

    weather forecast for london

Alongside minimal preparation time, the other factor that had an effect on Sri Lanka was the weather.

The Old Trafford pitch may have suited them quite well but the temperatures certainly didn't. It was nippy, very windy and there were several rain delays but thankfully, this week looks better.

It's not a scorcher, but it should be a little less of a shock to the system!

  9. Postpublished at 10:19 British Summer Time 29 August

If you missed the first Test, here's a little recap.

England's margin of victory was ultimately pretty comfortable but they were pushed hard by Sri Lanka, who will be hoping for more consistency this week having had a little more time in English conditions.
