Will England win? Yes. Will we beat South Africa? No, so it’s about respectability today but I don’t think it changed much in the bigger picture sadly. It’s not a great team, it needs a bit of an overhaul.

    Shot, Liam.

A thick outside edge flies away to the boundary.

He smiles. Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott throws his head back in disappointment.

You know what, Rahmat Shah almost dropped that. It popped out of his hands initially but it just clung into his fingertips.

Liam Livingstone is the new batter.

All the fielder had to think about was dropping it.

    Another twist.

Jos Buttler looks to take on Azmatullah Omarzai's short ball but the connection isn't the best.

It goes more up than far and Rahmat Shah settles himself under it and takes the catch.

England still need 110 from 79 balls.

Afghanistan need too keep moving their bowling attack around and trying different things. This game feels as if there will be a few more pinch points along the way.

Right now, both teams will feel as if they're in touching distance of the win.

Joe Root's tempo against the spinners has been excellent today. He has scored 68 runs off 64 balls against them, playing 67% of his shots off the back foot. In all his ODI innings where he has faced at least 30 balls of spin, this is the most he has played on the back foot.

  8. Eng 214-4published at 36 overs

    Need 112 from 84 balls

Argh. Joe Root tries to work Rashid Khan into mid-wicket but three times he hits the fielder on the ring and the pressure builds.

Try and tell Root that, though. Rashid drops short to end the over and Root finds the mid-wicket boundary.

A reminder that the team that loses this match is out of the tournament. The winner stays alive.

    Tidy over from Azmatullah Omarzai.

Four runs and a wide from it.

There was an appeal for caught behind against Joe Root. It was lead by wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz but it looked like it clearly came off Root's trouser pocket.

As I've just spoke about the remaining overs, Fazalhaq Farooqi is sat in the Afghanistan dugout.

He looks to be struggling with some sort of injury. That could be big...

They have actually returned to the pace of Azmatullah Omarzai now.

Afghanistan are going to have to hope that their spinners will do the job.

  13. Eng 203-4published at 34 overs

    Need 123 from 96 balls

    Six from Rashid Khan's over.

Out of the three spinners that have bowled so far - Rashid, Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ahmad - they have seven overs left.

That means nine overs will have to come from the seamers. Will that play into England's hands?

Rashid Khan is going to come back into the attack after the drinks break.

He's got figures of 1-41 from his first six overs.

It's finely poised. The last wicket of Harry Brook was a momentum killer because he was ticking along quite nicely. Joe Root has been mirroring what Ibrahim Zadran did in the first innings.

This partnership is massive from an England point of view.

Shall we do another thumbs up and down vote?

Will England win? They need 129 runs from 102 balls.

Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no.

England just need to be in touch. There's plenty of people who are capable of coming on in the last 10 overs who can hit big but they've got to bring the score up first.

  18. drinks break

    Eng 197-4published at 33 overs

    Root 74, Buttler 30

Jos Buttler and Joe Root have put on 64 from 68 balls for the fifth wicket. They are putting England in a decent position, but at least one of them, if not both, need to go on.

    It's time for a drink.
