You can tell what Joe Root was trying to do, there was a gap and he tried to send it. He's utterly fed up, he's done all that he can without the support he's needed.

The game's not over by any stretch, but the hopes are diminished with that dismissal.

There was quite a bit of bat on that and Joe Root steers it straight into the gloves of the keeper.

    Root c Gurbaz b Azmatullah 120 (Eng 287-7)

    OH NO!

Joe Root tries to upper cut/guide Azmatullah Omarzai over the keeper/short third but the ball is probably too close to him.

He ends up just guiding it through to Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Afghanistan celebrate wildly.

The whole England changing room rise for Joe Root, who departs for a brilliant 120 off 111 balls. A superb knock.

    He's given England a chance.

    Clever from Joe Root.

Two more for Jamie Overton as he pulls into the leg side.

  12. Eng 278-6published at 45 overs

Oh! Joe Root goes the ramp/reserve sweep again but misses to end the over.

England are just ahead of Afghanistan at this point, but they still need 48 from 30 balls.

A reminder whoever loses is out of the Champions Trophy. The winner stays alive going into the final round of group games.

    Eng 274-6published at 44.1 overs

    Need 52 from 35 balls

    What a shot!

Great start to the over for England.

  16. Eng 268-6published at 44 overs

    Need 58 from 36 balls

Rashid Khan was getting rather frustrated with this fielders in that over. The stares are still going on long after the over continued.

England have seen off Rashid. He finishes with 1-66 from his 10 overs. England have actually dealt with him pretty well.
