Liam Livingstone threw the bat at it. He tried to hit it really hard rather than placing it away.

Joe Root is being stranded here.

    Livingstone c Gurbaz b Gulbadin 10 (Eng 233-6)

    Horrible shot.

There is width on offer from Gulbadin Naib but Liam Livingstone tries to throw the absolute kitchen sink at it and he can only offer a healthy edge behind.

    Joe Root loses another partner.

That was nothing more than a push. Liam Livingstone used the pace of the ball, just nudged it and this very good pitch lets it run away.

  5. Eng 232-5published at 38.2 overs

    Need 94 from 70 balls

    Nice touch from Liam Livingstone.

He works Gulbadin Naib through point for four.

That was pure placement and timing, rather than power.

  6. Postpublished at 16:11 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

Gulbadin Naib is on to bowl for the first time in the match.

He had figures of 0-42 in seven overs in their defeat by South Africa.

The difference between the way Joe Root hit that and the way Jos Buttler was trying to play it is that it's smooth when Root plays it.

  9. Eng 228-5published at 38 overs

    Need 98 from 72 balls

Pressure was building on England but Joe Root finds the boundary with a reverse sweep to end the over.

The last final overs have seen England add 31 runs. That has pushed the required run-rate up to 8.16.

I want to be fair to Lee, he sent that message before the Jos Buttler wicket.

Unsure if he still thinks England will win or not.

Will England win? Yes. Will we beat South Africa? No, so it’s about respectability today but I don’t think it changed much in the bigger picture sadly. It’s not a great team, it needs a bit of an overhaul.

    Shot, Liam.

A thick outside edge flies away to the boundary.

He smiles. Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott throws his head back in disappointment.

You know what, Rahmat Shah almost dropped that. It popped out of his hands initially but it just clung into his fingertips.

Liam Livingstone is the new batter.

All the fielder had to think about was dropping it.

  15. wicket

    Buttler c Rahmat b Azmatullah 38 (Eng 216-5)

    Another twist.

Jos Buttler looks to take on Azmatullah Omarzai's short ball but the connection isn't the best.

It goes more up than far and Rahmat Shah settles himself under it and takes the catch.

England still need 110 from 79 balls.

Afghanistan need too keep moving their bowling attack around and trying different things. This game feels as if there will be a few more pinch points along the way.

Right now, both teams will feel as if they're in touching distance of the win.

Joe Root's tempo against the spinners has been excellent today. He has scored 68 runs off 64 balls against them, playing 67% of his shots off the back foot. In all his ODI innings where he has faced at least 30 balls of spin, this is the most he has played on the back foot.

  18. Eng 214-4published at 36 overs

    Need 112 from 84 balls

Argh. Joe Root tries to work Rashid Khan into mid-wicket but three times he hits the fielder on the ring and the pressure builds.

Try and tell Root that, though. Rashid drops short to end the over and Root finds the mid-wicket boundary.

A reminder that the team that loses this match is out of the tournament. The winner stays alive.

    Need 118 from 90 balls

    Tidy over from Azmatullah Omarzai.

Four runs and a wide from it.

There was an appeal for caught behind against Joe Root. It was lead by wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz but it looked like it clearly came off Root's trouser pocket.
