Summary

  1. SA 69-4published at 30 overs

Just a single to Temba Bavuma off another challenging Josh Hazlewood over.

Beau Webster got a little fortunate with his lbw reviews yesterday and the South Africa skipper will be hoping the can do the same.

South Africa have played with a little more intent than yesterday and Temba Bavuma was just trying to survive last night.

It's amazing what happens when you can transfer a bit of the pressure back on to the bowlers.

  3. SA 68-4published at 29 overs

Kyle Verreynne, the next batter in, also had very little faith in Bavuma surviving that decision because he'd picked up his bat and gloves and started to make his way out of the changing room.

I don't think Temba Bavuma has hit that. I know there's a mark on ultra edge but I think there's a gap.

His first reaction was, 'How have I missed that ball?'. He's had a bit of luck there.

  5. SA 67-4published at 28 overs

The same applies to me, Vic.

Well, I'm not entirely sure about my wonderful future but this probably isn't the place for discussing some kind of midlife crisis.

I don't think Bavuma knew about that!

I'm sure Temba Bavuma has a wonderful future ahead of him but I don't think it's as an umpire because he missed that nick.

OK, turns out my opinion is worth very little.

Temba Bavuma has edged it onto his pad, and survives!

    Got 'im!

Josh Hazlewood has Temba Bavuma given lbw. The Proteas captain reviews - very optimistically, for what my opinion is worth...

For a moment, I think Mitchell Starc thought he got that right but David Bedingham times that perfectly for four.

  10. SA 66-4published at 27 overs

    Lovely!

David Bedingham whips one off his pads for four, and predictably, Mitchell Starc follows it up with a bouncer.

  11. SA 59-4published at 26 overs

The South Africa batters are almost playing hit and run rules this morning, dabbing the ball into the covers and setting off straight away.

It's a far more positive approach to what we saw yesterday, thankfully.

    Hazlewood bowls Stubbs for two

Having seen Australia bowl so far, it’s made me think that England’s more aggressive style could serve them well in the Ashes. They may need to put the Australian bowlers under pressure, as at the moment, particularly Hazlewood, don’t seem to be bowling many bad balls.

It's a lovely response from Mitchell Starc after being hit by Temba Bavuma for four. He glares at the batter.

  14. SA 55-4published at 25 overs

    And again!

Temba Bavuma with an almost identical lofted drive to the boundary, which doesn't please Mitchell Starc as he fires in a trademark yorker to end the over. The South Africa skipper digs it out, and that's 10 from the over.

    Finally, some intent.

The crowd is perhaps a little thinner at Lord's than yesterday.

I saw the Universe Boss, aka former West Indies batter Chris Gayle, getting the party started in a pub near Lord's as I was walking back to the hotel last night.

You could not miss him a dazzling shirt. Perhaps there are few 'absent hurt' this morning..

Well, speaking of Temba Bavuma, he drives Mitchell Starc up and over cover for four!

    Lovely.

    More of that, please.

  17. SA 45-4published at 24 overs

So much of the discussion around this Test match has just been about how ridiculously tall everyone is.

Do we reckon it's more annoying for the likes of Marco Jansen and Beau Webster to be reminded that they are very tall, or for Temba Bavuma to be reminded that he's not?

All the best bowlers wilt a little bit when the batters are scoring runs runs against them, but they love a passive batsman because they know they'll get them out eventually.

South Africa have got to be more proactive this morning. They ground to a halt yesterday evening.
