Mr Stoney: England are still more than capable of losing this. Once again seem clueless how to deal with the tail. I’m sure New Zealand won’t field as badly as they did in the first innings.

    Thank you kindly, Sam.

I suppose we should take a look at lowest fourth-innings totals defended, out of curiosity.

  3. England need 104 to winpublished at 00:20 Greenwich Mean Time

As frustrating as that last little session would have been for England, that was a good session all told for the tourists.

Four wickets on a flat pitch to leave themselves just 104 to win.

New Zealand need something incredibly special to deny them from here.

To take us through the lunch break and the England chase, I'll leave you in the capable hands of Timothy Abraham.

That brings the end of a really good innings by Daryl Mitchell, and gives Brydon Carse his sixth wicket in this second innings and 10 in the match.

A wholehearted effort from Carse on a pitch that has got flatter and flatter. England will be relieved to break that last-wicket partnership having been made to wait a little longer than they thought.

That does it for England, Brydon Carse gets his sixth!

A full ball from the seamer, Daryl Mitchell tries to hoist it over long off but instead picks out Chris Woakes 10 yards off the rope.

Carse has 10 in the match for the first time in first-class cricket.

    Cheers for that, Ricky...

The current England side must be the worst Test-playing side in the last 50 years at getting the tail out, it’s becoming a constant problem now.

On and on we go. At the moment, with not a whole lot happening.

A single from Chris Woakes' latest ensures it'll be Daryl Mitchell facing up to Brydon Carse.

In Tests in 2024, the average number 11 batter is dismissed every 18 deliveries - Will O'Rourke has been dismissed every 35 deliveries in first-class cricket, the same rate as England's previous specialist No.11 Jack Leach.

This will be nagging away at England. Every time you have a last-wicket partnership it's frustrating.

    Well played by Will O'Rourke.

He plays out a maiden from Brydon Carse and on we go.

A couple of things have crept up in the last however long since the ninth wicket fell.

Daryl Mitchell is now up to 83 and within striking distance of a hundred, while it is only seven overs until the second new ball is available.

NZ could be 180 ahead by tea. (Worth a try, eh, given that I'm called David.)

With Will O'Rourke on strike, Brydon Carse returns to the attack.

Can the man already with a maiden Test five-for to his name finish this off for England?

Four more to end the over as Daryl Mitchell pulls square.

Arguably, both sides get what they want: runs for New Zealand, the number 11 on strike for England.

The lead is now above 100 for the Black Caps.

Halfway through the over with Daryl Mitchell on strike, the field comes up.

Mitchell takes the opportunity to hit over the in-field for four but England won't mind that too much at this stage.

An elegant drive through the covers brings Will O'Rourke three and a new Test best score of five not out.

The next over should be the last before lunch but unless a wicket falls, they will continue for a while longer.

Daryl Mitchell has bided his time but now he comes after Shoaib Bashir.

Down the track and a mighty swing of the bat to send the ball back over the bowler's head for six.

Possibly, Matt, but then he does average just 8.33 in 28 first-class innings with a top-score of 17 not out.

He is still there now, though, surviving another two balls at the end of Chris Woakes' over.

England are a long way from being concerned here, it'll be more just frustration at not having managed to wrap this up quicker.

In all fairness to O'Rourke he is still an unknown quantity - in his eighth Test match and only been out four times in 12 innings. Could potentially be a better batter than we give credit for.

We're a little over 10 minutes away from when lunch is scheduled to take place as Shoaib Bashir gets through another over.

But with New Zealand nine down, they will likely continue on for another half hour - or until the final wicket goes down if it doesn't come before then.

If England can't get the tail out but can root out middle order, why don't they ignore O'Rourke and focus on Mitchell.
