The possible injury to Ben Stokes is a concern. I'm sure we'll find out more but when you talk about the composition and balance of teams he is key to England. We were talking about how fit and strong he was as a young player, but he's had problems in recent years.

He's the sort of character who does not want to show and tell his injuries. We know how much he wants to lead England and contribute.

Brydon Carse continues into the sixth over of his spell.

Just two runs from his latest as he bowls to Daryl Mitchell, who is happy to stay watchful while Tim Southee goes on the attack at the other end.

    Six more!

Tim Southee goes again but doesn't get all of this one.

But there's still enough on it to just clear Joe Root at deep mid-wicket.

    Time for drinks.

Tim Southee has been swinging like a rusty gate since he came in - and this time he connects.

Short ball from Gus Atkinson and middled over deep square leg on the pull by Southee.

As frustrating as the short ball plan can be to watch, Brydon Carse is showing its worth here. Matt Henry was clearly expecting the short ball, but was undone by the double bluff and maybe a hint of reverse swing as well.

  8. Carse a definite for Australiapublished at 22:55 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2024

Brydon Carse has really impressed me this winter. When England went to Pakistan I wasn't entirely sold on him but having watched him bowl there, where it was extremely hot, he had a huge amount of energy. He kept going and bowled quick.

He does just enough with the ball. He doesn't move it extravagantly, but does bowl a heavy ball and he bowls a nice full length with that heavy ball. He is really effective. Carse is someone who will definitely be in Australia, on those pitches, in a year's time.

This is the third match of Brydon Carse's Test career and he's taken 18 wickets at a fraction under 18.

    Not bad at all.

Number 19 nearly comes as Daryl Mitchell gets a leading edge trying to turn a short ball to leg but it dips to land safely just when Carse thought he might have a chance.

Tim Southee is going to take on the short ball, that much is clear.

He's pinned on the grille of the helmet by Gus Atkinson and there is a delay as he goes through a concussion check.

Looks like he's OK to continue, though, and sees the last ball drift down leg.

Good that you have options, Tom!

Less good is that Ben Stokes has pulled up halfway through his over and collected his cap from the umpire.

He must have tweaked something but he is staying out on the field.

Gus Atkinson will complete the over.

I’ve accelerated the search for tourist activities in Christchurch; the Quake museum, 50 minute city tram, a gondola, and a few beaches.

    It's five for Brydon Carse!

Brilliant from the big fast bowler.

Matt Henry was expecting a short ball, Carse went full and the ball tailed back to pin him plumb in front.

No point reviewing that and Carse raises the ball to the crowd to celebrate his maiden Test five-wicket haul.

No such luck for Nathan Smith, it's three reds!

It was banged in short again by Brydon Carse but, as with the dismissal of Glenn Phillips yesterday, it nips back a touch and stays low.

Smith was surprised and hit on the knee-roll with ball-tracking showing it was going on to hit leg stump.

Has Brydon Carse made the breakthrough for England?

The ball stays low and hits Nathan Smith on pad.

Fuller from Ben Stokes and Nathan Smith drives uppishly but finds the gap in the covers.

Good running allows them to get back for three.

All very simple for New Zealand at the moment. I did say there was no guarantee of a quick finish...

We've seen a few matches in history where seemingly simple chases of 150 or so have become quite awkward, and ended up in defeats. The pitch here, though, does still look quite good for batting.

Daryl Mitchell and Nathan Smith have played nicely, with real composure early on here, and have managed to blunt England's bowlers as they continue the bouncer barrage.

The pitch is pretty flat so you can see why the tourists are trying it but so far today - and it is only a few overs - it has been ineffective in the extreme.
