    Number 11? Nah, not me.

  2. NZ 231-9published at 68 overs

    Lead by 80

I'm not saying Chris Woakes has managed to get access to the texts we receive but he has exclusively bowled full and straight to number 11 Will O'Rourke so far.

His record overseas might not be great but he's doing what the majority of you have been calling for right now.

Of course, as I write that he bowls a bouncer... Maiden.

  3. NZ 231-9published at 67 overs

    Lead by 80

Shoaib Bashir nearly wraps up the innings for England.

He drags Will O'Rourke forward, finds the edge but the ball goes quickly and wide of the diving Harry Brook at slip.

The over ends with Daryl Mitchell reverse-sweeping over short third for four. Nicely played.

We're going to see a bit of spin.

Will Daryl Mitchell go after Shoaib Bashir? I'd imagine England are counting on him at least trying!

  5. NZ 225-9published at 66 overs

    Lead by 74

Big swing and a miss from Daryl Mitchell but the ball from Gus Atkinson bounces just over the top of the stumps.

A more controlled stroke follows, pushed out to long-on for a single.

  6. NZ 224-9published at 65.3 overs

    Lead by 73

    Top shot from Daryl Mitchell.

He gives himself room and crunches a cut shot away square, into the gap for four.

Brydon Carse has really come of age in this Test match. Batted well, bowled well.

  8. NZ 220-9published at 65 overs

    Lead by 69

That's exactly what Chris Woakes is doing, Ed, but so far Will O'Rourke is equal to it.

Three solid defensive shots in a row.

Ed O'Toole: Is it just me or is there anyone else who is thinking just bowl at the stumps to no 11?

  10. NZ 220-9published at 64.3 overs

    Lead by 69

Short from Chris Woakes and Daryl Mitchell decides it's time for some invention.

He moves across his stumps and ramps the ball over Ollie Pope for four.

Confidence in Will O'Rourke must be growing, though, because he takes a single to leave the number 11 with three balls to negotiate.

  11. NZ 215-9published at 64 overs

    Lead by 64

Maiden from Gus Atkinson as Will O'Rourke manages to safely deal with a few short balls and then watches the last slip down leg.

Worked for both David's, so can I raise the possibility of NZ leading by 180 before tea?

Mitchell can be more flamboyant than he's shown in this innings, but this has been an innings of determined resistance. It's a marker for him and the Black Caps.

  14. NZ 215-9published at 63 overs

    Lead by 64

Will O'Rourke is off the mark by pushing through mid-on.

He must have thought there was two available but has to settle for a single so he'll be on strike for the start of the next over.

    NZ 213-9

Penultimate ball of the over and Daryl Mitchell pinches a single to take him to his 13th Test fifty.

He's done his best to hold this innings together since Kane Williamson was dismissed but just hasn't had the support.

  16. NZ 213-9published at 62.2 overs

    Lead by 60

The field is spread as Chris Woakes comes on for his first bowl of the day.

No surprise that Daryl Mitchell turns down the single after pushing out to long-off.

The next is hit out towards the same area... and just short of Brydon Carse, who might not have picked that up initially.

They run two to take Mitchell to 49.

  17. NZ 211-9published at 62 overs

    Lead by 60

Four balls for Gus Atkinson at number 11 Will O'Rourke but the tailender survives...

Well, he did but a no-ball gives Atkinson another shot - and O'Rourke deals with that one too.

He turns down a single and I think we can now expect Daryl Mitchell to go on the attack.

I remember watching Southee’s debut in 2008 when he started smashing sixes all over the place…as if that was 16 years ago and he’s still at it! What a servant he has been to both NZ and cricket in general.

Joe Root has been at slip, short leg and now out in the deep. He took that nicely. It was a case of third time unlucky for Tim Southee after two big shots which brought him sixes.

    Tim Southee holes out.

It was always going to happen eventually and England will be pleased it has come as quickly as it has.

Dug in by Gus Atkinson, swung away by Southee but more high than long and Joe Root comes around from deep mid-wicket to take a good catch.

One more for England to get to wrap up the innings.
