    Expect plenty of runs today!

Former England captain on BBC 5 Live Cricket Show

I am staggered England don’t have a left-armer. I find it remarkable they have gone to India and tried to blow them away with rockets. 90mph coming onto the bat in India is lovely because you can deflect.

I am staggered they are not playing another spinner in Rehan Ahmed. I can’t see England winning the T20 World Cup with all of the rockets. They need a left-armer, left-arm spinner and variation in that bowling attack.

200 feels like a par score. To get there you need to have a belting wicket.

If they get partnerships going - just six or seven overs - the pressure goes onto the India spinners.

No Arshdeep Singh is significant for England. He moves the ball both ways in the air. Mohammed Shami is more of a line bowler. Phil Salt will be sat there praising the lord.

Mohammed Shami is back in the playing XI after a long injury break. He last played for India in the Cricket World Cup Final v Australia in Ahmedabad on 19 November 2023.

As Jos Buttler said at the toss, England are unchanged but Jamie Smith takes the gloves from Phil Salt. India make one switch, with Mohammed Shami returning from injury to replace India's T20 record wicket taker Arshdeep Singh.

  7. 'We need to be at our best today'published at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

England captain Jos Buttler: "It looks a really good surface, looking forward to batting on it.

"We'd have chased as well. The guys had a good practice yesterday, we're really excited for the match."

On the previous game: "A really good game of cricket, we fought hard and pushed them all the way. We need to be at our best today to take the win.

"We know how India will play, a strong team, we need to put enough runs on the board to defend.

"We're going with the same team, but Jamie Smith is going to keep wicket today. He's got a tight calf, so he's going to stand behind the stumps rather than run around.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav: "It [the pitch] looks nice and hard. I don't think it is going to change later on. Rajkot has always been a good track. I am sure it will be a sporting one."

The narrative before this series was about England's fresh start. For a variety of reasons it has all felt very familiar since.

Much like the England Women's team last week, the men's team now need a first win of the tour to save a series before it's even really got going for them.

Can Jos Buttler's charges fare better than Heather Knight's?

Or might we be facing a clean sweep double?
