  1. Eng 128-4published at 28 overs

Jamie Smith gets off the mark first ball as he joins Joe Root, on 36.

He's just picked up where he left off in the first innings, making batting look completely effortless.

It was entertaining, it was risky, and now it is over.

  3. wicket

    Brook c Madushka b Jayasuriya 37 (Eng 127-4)

    The catch is finally taken!

Harry Brook takes on the spinner once too many time, holing out to deep mid-wicket where Nishan Madushka clings on this time after dropping him previously on nine.

An entertaining cameo comes to an end.

If feels like Harry Brook could hit every ball for four but he doesn't. He is so controlled and selects the balls to hit very well.

  5. Eng 126-3published at 27 overs

I'm sorry if you have day four or five tickets. The declaration won't be far away.

  6. Eng 124-3published at 26.1 overs

Up and over cover for four.

Harry Brook holds the pose for good measure.

    Declaration before lunch, anyone?

  7. Postpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 31 August

    The lead is 350.

    The fifty partnership is up.

Something tells me Sri Lanka are going to regret this one?

  8. Eng 120-3published at 26 overs

Yep, it's time to go through the gears.

Joe Root skips down the pitch and drives Jayasuriya for consecutive fours over mid-on.

  9. Eng 106-3published at 25 overs

Driven beautifully for four by Harry Brook, ending an over that was full of pretty unthreatening short stuff from Asitha Fernando.

There are early indications that this is going to be a very dangerous partnership from Sri Lanka's point of view.

  10. How's stat?!published at 12:21 British Summer Time 31 August

From CricViz - Pope now averages 28 in the first session of Test matches compared to 38 in both the second and third sessions.

  11. Eng 104-3published at 24 overs

Decent over from Prabath Jayasuriya, just two from it, but he must still be seething about that dropped catch in his previous over.

You definitely don't want to give Harry Brook a second life when he's got a platform of 335 to work with.

  12. Eng 102-3published at 23 overs

It was pretty much the same shot that Ollie Pope was attempting.

Just with a slightly different result.

  13. Eng 95-3published at 22.1 overs

A flat-batted upper-cut off the short ball for four through the covers.

    Harry Brook, you are outrageous.

Poor Jayasuriya...a horrible drop then he gets smashed for six next ball.

  15. 6 runs

    Eng 91-3published at 22 overs

Of course, the next ball is slammed for six.

    Brutal.

  16. dropped catch

Brook dropped on 9published at 21.4 overs

    Eng 84-3

    I was saying...?

The plan works perfectly. Harry Brook attacks the spinner, gets his slog sweep completely wrong, and it falls perfectly in place for a simple catch at deep mid-wicket.

Except, Nishan Madushka makes a right mess of it and spills it.

Prabath Jayasuriya can't believe it. That's a huge miss.

  17. Eng 80-3published at 21 overs

It's been a disappointing showing generally but there is so much to like about this Sri Lanka side.

Kamindu Mendis is one of them, with some great knocks at number seven, and Asitha Fernando is another. It would be great to see them playing more Tests, to give themselves more of a chance. They're pretty much learning Test cricket on the job, so it's hardly an even playing field.

  18. Eng 78-3published at 20 overs

A skip down the pitch and a glorious drive for four by Harry Brook.

I suspect the spinner is going to be targeted here. There's not much turn on offer.

Surely it’s Atkinson time now? Quick 100, declare, skittle Sri Lanka for under 150 and be gone for tea and crumpets.
