With thanks to CricViz, that is just the third time Jamie Smith has been dismissed sweeping in his first-class career. The previous dismissals came against wrist spinners named Matthew (Critchley & Parkinson).

  3. Eng 171-5published at 38 overs

    Lead by 402

Chris Woakes strides out to the middle, which means all-rounder Gus Atkinson will be getting padded up.

For all the talk of declaration England may even be bowled out.

That saddens me, that decision. I'd have doubled my wickets tally if I bowled with the review system.

  5. wicket

    Smith lbw b Jayasuriya 26 (Eng 171-5)

Ball tracking showed the ball was going on to clip the top of leg stump.

    Jamie Smith departs for 26.

Both the bowler and the umpire were very confident there.

  7. England reviewpublished at 37.1 overs

Prabath Jayasuriya traps Jamie Smith in front as the England man misses a sweep.

The finger goes up but Smith is asking for another look.

I want England bowling for a quick burst before tea. That would be a real psychological challenge for Sri Lanka.

  9. 171-4published at 37 overs

Delicious from Joe Root as he calmly guides a late cut down the boundary for four.

That pushes England's lead beyond 400.

    Root-ian.

A worthy addition to the cricket lexicon.

  11. How's stat?!published at 13:49 British Summer Time 31 August

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

Joe Root is now only 150 runs behind Sir Alastair Cook's all-time total. Cook scored 12,472 runs.

His 50 has come from 65 balls with four fours with classic Root-ian accumulation.

  12. 50 runs

50 for Joe Rootpublished at 35.2 overs

    Joe Root is inevitable.

It is not his most convincing shot of the afternoon, but his checked drive squirts into a gap for a single to bring up his half-century.

It's got to be that, I'd say.

Alastair Cook knows that Joe Root is going to score more Test centuries than him eventually, I think he kind of just wants it over with!

It's a good record to have, for sure. What's the best sports record to have? Surely it's the 100 metres, fastest person alive?

  15. Eng 163-4published at 35 overs

Joe Root picking up where he left off, with two stylish drives to the fielder on the cover boundary for two.

    Root moves on to 49.

There are leaden skies above Lord's as the players make their way back out to the middle, with the floodlights well and truly on.

    Good conditions for bowling?

With England looking for quick runs this could be an eventful session.

Losing early wickets this innings may not matter in terms of the match but each of the top three has something to prove: Lawrence that he can put a good score together though he's out of position, Pope that he can make runs consistently (not consistently fail to do so) - to merit being in the team, never mind captain, and Duckett to show he's not just Flash Harry, bashing quick runs then getting out to stupid shots. They should all be watching Gus Atkinson, to see how it's done.

To declare or not to declare?

I fancy England will want to add to get a lead of 450+. There is still plenty of time in this match for Sri Lanka to pull off something spectacular in the fourth innings.

You blink and Root is into the 40s. The man is an un-showoffy legend.

Joe Root is still there though.

It is rapidly turning into his Test match, with the former skipper serenely moving on to 45 from 58 balls.

Jamie Smith is also still in the middle after hitting a punchy run-a-ball 23, to help England's lead up to a commanding 390.
