Brydon Carse is just getting a touch of shape. England bowlers have got to stay patient but it does look flat out there.

    India are patient too, watchful.

  2. Ind 14-0published at 4 overs

And again, India's openers stick to an end, with Rahul facing all of Brydon Carse's second over.

He gets off the mark with a bit of a poke at the opening delivery, with an edge going for four through gully.

  4. Ind 10-0published at 3 overs

    Best shot of the series!

Yashasvi Jaiswal plays a classy drive for four off Woakes, sending the ball past mid-off.

Again, he faces all of the Warwickshire seamer's deliveries - why not take turns, eh?

Lovely line from Carse. Just a suggestion of a bit of movement away but it's played very well by Rahul.

He hasn't taken the new ball for England before but he bowled so well in Pakistan before Christmas.

  7. Ind 4-0published at 2 overs

Brydon Carse takes the ball at the other end.

After Jaiswal hogged the first over, his opening partner KL Rahul takes all of the second, failing to score as Carse starts with a maiden.

I have my medical school finals in four days. Not the greatest time for a Test match to start for me here…

  9. Ind 4-0published at 1 over

Jaiswal sees off five balls from Woakes before getting his first runs from the final ball of the over, edging through what would be fourth slip for four.

Woakes might not mind that in the scheme of things.

I would love to see the first five overs as an all-out attack. An England that is aggressive is what Ben and Baz want to do. Three or four big chances in the first five overs, knock a few down and you can really open up a vulnerable middle order.

Typical Woakes. Bang on with a little bit of shape.

    Time to get going.

Chris Woakes is opening the bowling for England, the 23-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal defends the first delivery of the series.

I can't believe this day has finally arrived! It is going to be one heck of a series. Already have my list of excuses to submit to my boss about the lack of productivity for the next six weeks.

This opening partnership will be crucial. If England can just open the door early.

You do feel as though there are a few holes in this India batting side. If you can knock a few over early, there will be a few panics in that dressing room.

Chris Woakes looks good. He is someone that likes to have rhythm and games under his belt. But he is at an age and experience level where he knows his game.

He will be ready and up for it, he will be really good.

India captain Shubman Gill says he would prefer winning a five-Test series in England to the Indian Premier League when asked which would be more magnificent.

Hopefully the pitch has got a bit of pace and bounce. Watching the warm-up, there looks like there is good pace and carry.

At the minute this England team don't want to put extra pressure on people. They will be full throttle so let's just wait and see what happens.

  20. Who is India's debutant Sai Sudharsan?published at 10:49 British Summer Time 20 June

Shubman Gill said yesterday that India were still mulling over "one or two combinations" before deciding on their team.

One of the outcomes of that musing is to hand a debut to 23-year-old left-hander Sai Sudharsan at number three.

Sudharsan was one of the standout players at this year's IPL where he scored 759 runs at an average of 54.21 for Gujarat Titans and conveniently formed a fearsome opening partnership with a certain Shubman Gill.

He averages 39.93 from 29 first-class matches, including two spells with Surrey.
