Shubman Gill has a huge grin on his face. I'm not sure he was totally in control of that six, it was a top edge. But six runs all the same.

Shubman Gill has been in near-complete control during his maiden Test century in England, with a false shot rate of just 8.5% across his innings.

Since 2006, Rahul Dravid is the only Indian batter to scored a Test century in England with a lower false shot rate than Gill today.

Shubman Gill's foot movement has been fantastic. He has a great mindset and his technical play has been fantastic. He has also had immaculate forward defence all day - if you want to bat for five, six hours, you have to have a good forward defence.

    Top-edged for six!

It initially felt like Gill was offering a catching chance to Shoaib Bashir out at deep fine leg, but the ball clears the tall England spinner.

A fantastic over for Shubman Gill.

Gill has not put a foot wrong from the minute he walked out. He's dominated the afternoon with really quality and calmness. He has caressed the ball to all parts.

A princely hundred! He looked a little bit emotional, Shubman Gill. He has put India in a very strong position.

    There it is!

The new India captain times Josh Tongue through the covers for four, bringing up his century from 140 balls.

Shubman Gill's first century outside Asia, and what a time for it - he takes off his helmet and wheels the hand holding it round in an arc, before hugging Rishabh Pant.

I do wonder, why now? Pant just decides that he suddenly wants to hit a six and it's a big one. A huge blow.

'High into the stand' - Pant hits Bashir down the ground for huge six

Four and a six - that's the way to bring up your side's 300!

Deftness and power in successive balls from Pant - turning the ball fine with a late sweep then absolutely lashing Bashir down the ground and into the second tier of the stand behind the sight screen.

He doesn't score off the last two balls of the over, so we'll have Gill facing the next over attempting to get his century.

Four for Gill, chopping Tongue through third to move to 97.

The India captain is then sent back attempting a single to mid-on and has to dive for his crease - although I'm not sure the throw would have beaten him in the end.

He adds a single into the off side from the next delivery - that's 98.

I agree with Alex @17:27. It's a marathon not a sprint, would have preferred a few more wickets of course but get behind England, we are playing a great team in difficult conditions. Looking forward to seeing how it goes over the weekend.

It is just going the way of India at this point, they are a talented group. It is turning out to be a brilliant first day of the series.

Ah, that's a bit more familiar from Rishabh Pant.

He dispatches a poor ball from Bashir through mid-wicket for four, then tries to hoik the following delivery over long-on, but mis-times it, dropping the ball just in front of Brydon Carse out there.

England then go up for an lbw appeal against a sweeping Gill, but the impact is outside the line and there's no appetite for a review.

Not sure about that Ollie from Madeira. Bumrah, Siraj and Jadeja aren't a bad combination...

    James

Ollie, put some respect on South Africa's bowling attack, it took Australia apart in the Test World Cup Final! England without either Anderson or Broad are no longer one of the best attacks in the game.

Josh Tongue hasn't been able to get his length right today. He has struggled to do it on this pitch, it's either too full or too short. He is far better than what he has done today.

First sight of Josh Tongue in this session as he replaces Chris Woakes.

A couple of singles from his first six balls.

Is it me, or does this have the feel of a proper Test? We're into the evening session of day one and the side batting first isn't yet out or nine down.

Just one single off Bashir's over as we resume after drinks, as the England spinner continues to hold up this end well.

I wouldn’t say South Africa or especially India have better seam bowling attacks. Take Bumrah away and India look average at best. Let’s not forget Carse only got his first wicket in England today and Hull is back from a decent time out. Give our boys some faith!

I don't think Rishabh Pant had any clue about that ball. Woakes went wide of the crease and Pant was expecting that ball to move away from him.
