The teams are going to have to really think about the tempo.

For England, they'll be thinking about getting a partnership established. South Africa will want to get England out as cheaply as possible and think about how they will chase them down.

It could go either way, which is what you want.

    Four more!

Short and wide from Annerie Dercksen and Heather Knight is only too happy to slap it away through point.

    That was a gift.

    A boundary!

Annerie Dercksen is on to replace Ayanda Hlubi and starts with a ball angling down leg.

Heather Knight swivels, trying to pull it away and sends it very fine to the boundary cushion.

A lengthy duck for Maia Bouchier who faced 19 balls without scoring before she was dismissed. This is the joint 14th longest innings without scoring in women's Test cricket - the longest belongs to English top-order batter Christine Whatmough, who faced 68 balls before being dismissed against Australia in Adelaide, December 1984.

Marizanne Kapp brings that control that Kate Cross brings to an England side and at the other end, Hlubi is getting the ball to do a few things.

South Africa's discipline with the new ball has been very impressive.

Marizanne Kapp gets through another maiden and it looks as though England just want to survive the day and come back tomorrow.

They've got another 20 minutes or so before stumps so trying to score a run or two might not be a bad idea.

I mentioned bad light potentially cutting the day short(er than it could be, we're already well beyond the originally scheduled close).

But looking at the scene in Bloemfontein right now, that should not be an issue. Granted the TV images don't always give you the reality of the situation light-wise but it looks pretty bright at the moment.

Heather Knight, in need of a score, walks out at three and won't be best pleased to see the first ball she faces essentially roll along the ground after it pitches.

Thankfully for the England skipper, it was wide of off stump because otherwise she was in trouble.

Good ball to finish from Ayanda Hlubi, squaring up Knight with another one that moves away off the seam. Wicket maiden.

    How cruel is this game?

Maia Bouchier batted brilliantly yesterday. She looked in brilliant form. Today, she's faced 19 dot balls and managed to get one to nibble her outside edge.

Our old coach, Jack Birkenshaw, used to say one day you can bat like Don Bradman and the next day like Donald Duck. It's something you have to remember as a cricketer, it's the biggest leveller.

Maia Bouchier is gone for a 19-ball duck.

After a brilliant century in her first Test innings, the England opener falls without scoring in her second.

It's a wonderful delivery from Ayanda Hlubi, angling in and then nipping away to take a feather of an edge through to Sinalo Jafta.

What a difference a day makes.

I liked the intensity there from Tammy Beaumont. Straight away she called for two to make sure Maia Bouchier was getting a shimmy on.

Marizanne Kapp is holding a straighter line to Tammy Beaumont, who is an lbw candidate early in her innings, in this over.

She goes slightly too straight, though, and Beaumont is able to work is away square for two.

The pitch has slowed up a lot and there isn't a huge amount on offer for the bowlers, unfortunately. We might see a bit of turn at the back end of today and maybe going into tomorrow and the fourth day, the spinners could come into play.

Great start from a fired up South African bowling unit who have bowled extremely tightly, bowling three maidens on the trot. It's the first time in women's Test matches since (2013) where the first three overs of an innings have gone for no runs.

Maia Bouchier ducks a short ball from Ayanda Hlubi but the ball doesn't get up at all - and it wasn't that far away from hitting the stumps.

Bowled ducking a bouncer is not a dismissal anyone wants on their CV.

From the 19th ball of the innings, England get off the mark!

Firmly punched into the covers by Tammy Beaumont and, although it is cut off, she scampers through for a single.

Three maidens on the trot to start the innings.

South Africa have not given the England openers much to work with and, on the occasion they have bowled a bad ball, the batters have picked out the fielders.

A brilliant start for South Africa, putting Maia Bouchier and Tammy Beaumont under a bit of pressure. They both scored freely at the start of play yesterday.

Very wide ball to finish the over from Ayanda Hlubi but it's back-to-back maidens to start the innings.

How much longer is left in the day? Anywhere between about 20 minutes and an hour depending on who you ask.

Hold that thought, we've just had word that if the overs aren't bowled by 15:44 GMT (and they won't be), play can continue until 16:14 GMT. All light dependent, of course.

Short and wide to start from Ayanda Hlubi but Tammy Beaumont misses out.

She doesn't get hold of the cross-bat shot and it is easily stopped in the covers.
