Solid defence from Chris Woakes as he plays out a maiden from Will O'Rourke.

Just shy of 25 minutes until tea and this second Test remains pretty evenly balanced given the movement we've seen off the pitch.

Of course, if it starts to flatten out quickly, New Zealand would feel they have the upper hand.

    • Kamindu Mendis - three

A pair of singles from the Tim Southee over but the Black Caps veteran has got this ball talking.

The ball seems to be doing more in general and I don't think it is just because New Zealand have had new batters to bowl at.

  4. Eng 237-6published at 44.2 overs

    What a delivery.

Tim Southee produces a ball so good that even Harry Brook, on 112 from 98 balls, can't get near.

Pitched up on middle and off, the ball nips off the seam to beat the outside edge but a couple of inches.

No chance of an edge. That was too good.

  5. Eng 233-6published at 44 overs

That's Test cricket for you, Paul. It could all change again in the next half an hour.

Will O'Rourke has been the catalyst for this latest swing of momentum in New Zealand's favour.

After overcooking a bouncer to give away five wides, he produces another brute of a delivery that thuds into the gloves of Chris Woakes.

That four overs in the spell for O'Rourke, the Black Caps will want him to carry on for at least one more, you'd think.

About 30 minutes ago when England scoring at 5.22 an over 400 was on for the day, suddenly 300 is the target for the innings total.

    Chris Woakes loves to drive.

Twice in the over, it nearly does for him as Tim Southee shapes the ball away to beat the edge.

But on the third occasion, Woakes gets four. Timed nicely enough through the covers to get off the mark.

In the first innings at Christchurch, Brook and Pope put on 151 from 31 overs, taking England from 71-4 to 222-5.

Today they scored 174 from 26.2 overs, moving their side from 43-4 to 217-5.

  9. Eng 222-6published at 42 overs

Chris Woakes is the new batter for England.

He gets a good one from Will O'Rourke to start but just about deals with it.

Two quick wickets for New Zealand to put a bit of pressure back on the tourists but Harry Brook is still there.

    Edged and gone.

Ben Stokes hadn't been in for long but that had been coming.

Superb from Will O'Rourke, he's been excellent in this spell.

Perfect line from round the wicket, forcing Stokes to play and a bit of extra bounce to find the edge. Carries comfortably to Tom Latham.

That does look a strong batting line-up, Hammersfanno1, no doubt about it.

Not so sure you can say Joe Root should bat three when his excellent form, to go back to the top of the Test batting rankings, has come at four.

Crucially though, I'm just not sure I can handle another round of the Root at three or four debate...

Anyway, Tim Southee returns and concedes just a single in a tidy over.

All this debate about where Pope bats is resolved by Root batting where he should. Middle order of Root, Brook, Smith, Pope and Stokes in that order.

Drinks were taken after that wicket but play is back under way and Will O'Rourke has got his tail up.

The big fast bowler has the England skipper in his sights and attacks the left-hander from round the wicket.

Ben Stokes does get off the mark second ball but it's a leading edge, just wide of gully. That could so easily have gone to hand.

    Pope c Ravindra b O'Rourke 66 (Eng 217-5)

The end of a innings-saving partnership.

Banged in short by Will O'Rourke - who is really enjoying the bounce in this pitch - and Ollie Pope gets in a tangle on the pull again.

The ball goes straight up and after a bit of confusion over where it has gone, Rachin Ravindra moves to his left from short leg and takes the catch.

Pope will be frustrated not to have gone on to a big one but his 174-run stand with Harry Brook has got England out of a hole.

  15. Eng 217-4published at 39 overs

    Brook 104, Pope 64

Just to make it absolutely clear that he isn't done yet, Harry Brook thumps the last ball of the Glenn Phillips over through extra cover.

Four more. He really is some player.

91 balls is Harry Brook's second fastest Test hundred, his fastest coming off 80 balls against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, 2022.

He becomes only the 16th batter with multiple Test hundreds at a 100 strike-rate or better and only the fourth Englishman on that list, alongside Ian Botham, Jonny Bairstow and Zak Crawley.

Harry Brook goes to a sublime hundred from just 91 balls.

He gets there with a push through point for one. An eighth Test century for England's rising superstar batter.

  18. Eng 210-4published at 38 overs

    Brook 99, Pope 64

The ball after that maximum, Ollie Pope tries to pull but the delivery from Will O'Rourke gets big on him.

It comes off high on the bat and loops into the leg side... before landing safely between the retreating short leg and mid-wicket.

  19. 6 runs

    Eng 209-4published at 37.4 overs

    Top shot!

Short, wide and Ollie Pope very deliberately hits up and over the the slip cordon.

The ball sails over the over the rope for his first six of the day.

  20. Eng 203-4published at 37.2 overs

Harry Brook is on the charge again, this time to the returning Will O'Rourke.

He tries to flay the ball over cover but gets a thick edge and the falls flies down towards the fielder wide at deep third.

The ball lands just short of him and Brook takes a single to go to 99.
