I have spent the better part of the last two years trying to convince anyone that will listen that Ollie Pope is our next best batsman. I don’t yet feel vindicated but do feel I will very soon…

The 150 partnership between Harry Brook and Ollie Pope comes up as they merrily work Glenn Phillips for ones and twos.

That is until the off-spinner drags one down slightly and Brook is able to get down and sleep over short fine leg for four.

    The Yorkshireman moves to 98.

  3. Eng 190-4published at 36 overs

    Brook 93, Pope 50

Harry Brook works the ball through mid-wicket for two before he is beaten by Matt Henry again to end the over.

On the drive but the ball snakes past the outside edge.

England are going at 5.27 an over but there is still plenty in this surface for the bowlers.

Yep, just too high and this time New Zealand do lose a review.

Ollie Pope had gone a long way across his stumps but the bounce ensured he was never in too much danger.

    Going over leg stump.

Another New Zealand review for lbw.

Matt Henry again hits Ollie Pope on the pads. Looks too high to me...

Ollie Pope reaches his 15th Test fifty.

Another good knock from the right-hander at number six as he gets there from 65 balls.

Agree with Duncan - Pope's been in when you'd expect a No.3 to be, and done well. Suggests it's a mindset shift to believe he can perform against fresh bowlers and a newish ball. He's not been in for the second or third overs too much either, with the success of Duckett/Crawley's partnership!

All a bit calmer for the remainder of the Glenn Phillips over.

Harry Brook drives for a couple before the England pair exchange singles.

This partnership is up to 140. An impressive stand to help England recover and rebuild.

Harry Brook is the fourth batter to reach 1,000 Test runs in 2024 after Joe Root, Ben Duckett and India's Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Only three times before have three or more England batters scored 1,000 runs in a calendar year, the last being 2016 (Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Alastair Cook).

    Harry Brook goes big again!

A skip down the track and he hammers the ball high over long off for his fifth six of the innings.

For a split second it looked like he might have skied it but the ball just kept going.

An excellent reference from Stephan, I'm sure, but one that has gone over my head, I'm afraid...

Anyway, Harry Brook is still going strong and hits Matt Henry over mid-on for four to go past 1,000 Tests runs this year.

There is a moment of excitement for New Zealand later in the over as Ollie Pope chips the ball towards mid-off.

It hangs in the air for a long time but goes to ground a couple of yards short of the fielder.

With a number of fielders out on the boundary, England are happy to deal in singles.

Four of them in Glenn Phillips' first over - including a quick one pinched to cover to end the over.

Interesting. We're going to see a bit of spin.

Harry Brook vs pace in Tests...

Down the track: 91 runs, 53 balls, one dismissal and an average of 91 and strike-rate of 171

    Backing away: 87 runs, 41 balls, 0 dismissals and a strike-rate of 212

    Expertly guided by Harry Brook.

The merest fraction of width from Matt Henry but the England man opens the face and runs the ball between second slip and gully for four.

  17. Eng 158-4published at 31 overs

    Brook 70, Pope 43

I don't think it's coming in for the 22nd or 13th over that is the issue, so much as the second or third, Duncan.

England have had some poor starts in their time but they'd have to go some for the number six to come in that early.

Either way, Ollie Pope came in at six today and is going along nicely.

He has a bit of luck as an outside edge off Nathan Smith falls just short of the cordon but the England vice-captain shrugs it off and slaps the next delivery through backward point for four.

Surely the debate about Pope at no 3 or no 6 is irrelevant if he comes in for the 22nd over (last Test) and 13th over (this Test) and gets runs? i.e. he could be doing that at no 3 or no 6. What does it matter where he’s listed to come in?

Everyone can go away thinking they were right there.

Impact was umpire's call and it was just clipping the top corner of off stump as well.

New Zealand keep the review but Ollie Pope survives.

Matt Henry is convinced he's got Ollie Pope lbw here.

The England man skips down and tries to hit to leg, misses and is rapped on the pad.

Given not out, he may have been outside the line but Henry persuades Tom Latham to send it upstairs.
