  1. NZ 30-1published at 8 overs

Four straight away for Williamson, getting up on his toes to send Atkinson away through square leg.

He picks up a couple of twos later in the over, clipping past mid-on and sending the ball out to point.

When Woakes’ overseas record is constantly compared with his home - people forget that he has spent his career up to now bowling behind Jimmy in the pecking order- ie not with the new ball.

  3. NZ 22-1published at 7 overs

Woakes twice beats Latham's bat in his third over and looks set for a maiden until the New Zealand captain angles the final ball away through fine leg for four.

Kane Williamson, in at three, has to wait to face his first delivery.

    This time it carries!

A thick edge on the drive and the ball flies to second slip and Harry Brook, who barely has to move to take the catch.

One down, how many more before the close?

  5. NZ 18-0published at 5.3 overs

    Dropped short.

Having been brought on strike by Latham three into the covers, Conway edges Atkinson right in front of the cordon.

He follows that up with a better shot, leaning back to cut uppishly to the boundary.

  6. NZ 11-0published at 5 overs

A first four for New Zealand as Conway lashes Woakes past mid-off to the boundary.

He can't score off the remainder of the over, blocking out the remaining four balls of the over.

Getting to the Adelaide Oval ready for a great day as a neutral, whilst constantly checking the score in Wellington! Carse to wreak havoc later.

  8. NZ 7-0published at 4 overs

Just one run from Atkinson's second over as he oversteps again.

It's something he struggled with in Christchurch, he'll hope to tighten this up swiftly.

This isn't the only Test cricket getting under way.

The second Test between Australia and India starts in Adelaide and it is a day-night game with the pink ball.

India have won the toss and have opted to bat first. Rohit Sharma is back, but takes on a new role in the middle order.

  10. NZ 6-0published at 3 overs

Plenty of movement for Chris Woakes, with his first ball hooping in enough that Ollie Pope needs to take a couple of small steps to his right to receive the delivery.

Another ball clouts Conway on the thigh pad, before the New Zealand opener inside edges square for two.

Gus Atkinson's rhythm wasn't what we're used to in the first Test. His pace was down by five kph in that game and that is quite considerable.

The arrival of Brydon Carse has been the unpredictable bowler since he came in. Atkinson has potentially moulded into the guy who has to be more consistent but he does keep picking up wickets.

I like the look of this England bowling attack in terms of the balance, they have a lot of options.

  12. NZ 4-0published at 2 overs

Gus Atkinson at the other end - like Woakes, he's bowling round the wicket to New Zealand's left-handed opening duo.

Devon Conway faces four dot before Atkinson concedes a run by overstepping.

A single into point follows, that gets Conway off the mark.

  13. NZ 2-0published at 1 over

Latham gets the New Zealand innings running, pushing Chris Woakes into the covers for a single.

England's opening bowler then gets good movement off the seam to cut through Devon Conway, the ball ducking in and just over the stumps.

Very close, and heartening for England.

It feels these days that England don't actually know how to or want to bat for 2 days. It's spectacular at times but we are losing more than we are winning against decent teams really.

A short-ish turnaround at the Basin Reserve, the players are heading out back out to the middle.

Like England, New Zealand have an opener in need of a score - Devon Conway made two and eight in the first Test.

He's accompanied by captain Tom Latham, who scored 47 and one in Christchurch.

The wicket of Carse saw Nathan Smith pick up his fourth wicket, but his 11.4 overs went for 86 runs, an economy rate of 7.37.

Will O'Rourke took 3-49, while Matt Henry was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, claiming 2-43 from his 15 overs, which included five maidens.

Meanwhile England's innings was completed in 54.4 overs, but they managed to score at 5.12 runs an over to make it to 280.

Feel like England’s tail have left 30-40 runs out there by trying to schwack (technical term meaning to whirl your willow) everything.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 54.4 overs

    Carse c O'Rourke b Smith 9 (Eng 280 all out)

And there goes the last man!

Carse wasn't going to hang about with just Bashir for company, his was wielding his bat like a broadsword throughout that over, trying to cart Nathan Smith through the covers.

Faced with a short ball, Carse goes for the big pull and Will O'Rourke takes an impressive tumbling catch at deep fine leg - don't forget, it's a long way to ground for someone as tall as him.

England's evening session ends remarkably rapidly - they'll now look to make in-roads into New Zealand's batting line-up before the close.

How is it possible to score 16 runs and lose three wickets in the space of 10 deliveries?
