Shoaib Bashir is the last man out of the hutch for England.

He blocks out the last two deliveries of O'Rourke's over.

Brook and Pope aside, England have batted woefully.

  3. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 53.4 overs

    Woakes c Blundell b O'Rourke 18 (Eng 275-9)

    Blundell called it right!

A gigantic waft from Chris Woakes, a tickle of an edge on snicko and that's enough for O'Rourke to pick up his third scalp.

Woakes trudges off, and New Zealand are one wicket away from wrapping up this innings.

  4. New Zealand reviewpublished at 53.4 overs

But Tom Blundell is going up from the following delivery - has Woakes nicked it?

He's the only New Zealand fielder to do so, and it's a tentative appeal, but Tom Latham trusts his keeper and calls for the review.

  5. dropped catch

Carse dropped on eightpublished at 53.3 overs

Blimey, you don't see Glenn Phillips drop many of those.

A Woakes three to long-on brings Carse back on strike, and the towering Will O'Rourke with his extra bounce finds the number nine's edge.

The ball flies to Phillips in the gully, and he offers England's new batter a second life by spilling the chance.

Will Carse take advantage? He starts by taking the single to move to nine from four balls.

  6. Eng 271-8published at 53 overs

    Carse starts with a bang!

He absolutely smokes his first delivery through the covers for four, then drops an edge just short of the cordon, with the ball slipping through the legs of the fielders and off to the boundary.

Three fours and two wickets from the over.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 52.4 overs

    Atkinson c Phillips b Smith 4 (Eng 263-8)

    Atkinson lasts three balls!

Having pulled Smith for four from his first ball, Atkinson offers the edge off the shoulder of the bat two deliveries later.

The ball flies to Glenn Phillips at the end of the cordon, and he takes the catch in front of his face, hands up, to secure Smith his third wicket.

The players are back out there.

Gus Atkinson, who averages 22 from his nine previous Tests, is set to begin his innings, with five balls left in Nathan Smith's over.

The view from the stands at Wellington

Plenty of England fans here in Wellington - here's the view some of them have from the stands.

    Thanks Sam.

An intriguing session in store for those of us up in the early hours (plus our various fellow travellers overseas).

Will England be batting at the close? Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson face a difficult test after tea.

    That wicket brings tea.

With Harry Brook gone, New Zealand will certainly feel they have the edge now.

England recovered well from 43-4 and were rattling along with Brook and Ollie Pope at the crease.

But both have now departed, so too has Ben Stokes, and it'll be up to the lower-order to get them up to 300 after the break.

To take you through tea and the start of the evening session, here's Mike Peter.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 52.1 overs

Brook run out (Smith) 123 (Eng 259-7)

Probably the only way he was going to get out.

A disappointing end to a fabulous innings from Harry Brook.

He nudges the ball leg side and wants a single but it goes straighter than he thought and Nathan Smith comes through to collect it off his own bowling.

Brook is stranded mid-pitch and Smith throws down the stumps. Excellent fielding to see the back of Brook.

  13. Eng 259-6published at 52 overs

Big play and a miss from Chris Woakes to end a maiden from Matt Henry.

That wasn't far from the outside edge at all.

Henry was through that over quickly so there will be time for one more from Nathan Smith before tea.

  14. Eng 259-6published at 51 overs

    Good running from Harry Brook.

Two balls running he nudges into a gap on the leg side and calls for two, scampering back comfortably each time.

He tries to uppercut Nathan Smith, on for what might be a solitary over before tea, last ball of the over but fails to connect this time.

That dismissal is the ninth time Ollie Pope has been dismissed pulling in Test cricket.

Since his debut only Rohit Sharma has been out pulling more frequently (10 dismissals).

Pope averages 31 with the pull shot but is dismissed every 17 balls playing it.

  16. Eng 255-6published at 50 overs

That little flurry in the last over aside, New Zealand have managed to keep things pretty tight since the wicket of Ollie Pope.

Yet England are still scoring in excess of five an over, which only goes to show how positively Pope and Harry Brook were playing in the first part of this afternoon session.

  17. 250 runs

    Eng 254-6published at 49 overs

    Brook 118, Woakes 15

Width from Tim Southee and that is just what Chris Woakes has been waiting for.

The all-rounder pounces on it and punches through point for four to bring up England's 250.

And again, a fuller ball this time but wide and driven through the covers by a grateful Woakes.

  18. Eng 243-6published at 48 overs

    Brook 115, Woakes 7

Chris Woakes breaks the pattern as he follows up Harry Brook's single by punching through the covers for two.

There's a beauty to finish from Matt Henry, though, getting the ball to straighten off the seam and whistle just past the bat of Woakes as he pressed forward.

  19. Eng 240-6published at 47 overs

Another over goes by with just a Harry Brook single from it.

He is happily pushing a single early in the over, making it seem as if batting on this pitch is no problem, then Chris Woakes - and Ben Stokes before him - get on strike and it quickly becomes clear it isn't.

Matt Henry is coming on for a burst before tea, let's see if he can trouble Brook.

Re: James in Basingstoke (1:32), I quite agree regarding Pope. He's a glorious batsman, but until people look more closely they won't realise the injuries he's played through and the sacrifices he's made for the cause. In recent months he's been captain, vice captain, wicket keeper, number 3, number 6, silly point, slip, umpire, statistician and the boundary rope, bless him.
