Hmm, it would actually be fairly impractical to write a live text commentary in wicketkeeper gloves.

Still, what are night shifts for, if not for experimentation?

    Thanks Tom.

The live text has nestled safely in my gloves.

It is time for me to take a break as well.

I will leave you in the safe hands of Mike Peter.

  4. Lunch - Eng 193-5published at 39 overs

Lovely shot from Ollie Pope, who leans into a full delivery from Tim Southee and drives nicely through the covers.

That will make Pope feel better, he moves onto 17 as we reach lunch with England on 193-5.

England started well but that flurry of wickets in the second half of the session has put victory within sight for New Zealand.

  5. Eng 187-5published at 38 overs

Lovely delivery from Mitchell Santner that drifts in to Gus Atkinson before spinning away and narrowly missing the edge.

Santner races through a maiden, so we should get another over in.

Not the prettiest shot, but Bethell has been some find this tour. Passes the eye test and had scored plenty of runs too. Don't envy the selectors working out how they can fit him into the team once Jamie Smith comes back.

    Jack

It’s criminal that Bethell survived the best bowling spell of the entire series and then got out trying to slog a nothing delivery. Bazball might be amazing at its best but it’s infuriating at its worst

Another four for Gus Atkinson - but this is served up with a huge dollop of luck.

It is a loose drive outside off that flicks the inside edge but somehow evades the leg stump.

We will probably squeeze at least one over in before lunch.

  8. Eng 181-5published at 36 overs

Gus Atkinson is here to have a bit of fun, smacking Mitchell Santner for three fours.

The first is an uppish drive with minimal back lift through the covers. The next is more controlled through a similar area, with the third pulled through backward square leg.

In the last five years in Test cricket only Mark Wood (90.7mph vs WI, Edgbaston) has bowled an 8+ over spell with a higher average speed than Will O'Rourke's 89.5mph today.

  10. Eng 168-5published at 35 overs

Gus Atkinson is the next batter so the hamstrung Ben Stokes is being pushed down the order.

It may have been a loose shot at the end but Jacob Bethell's innings was excellent. He has certainly been one of the finds of this tour.

Tim Southee strikes with the first ball of his spell.

It was a wide delivery that lures Jacob Bethell into an aggressive drive, but the ball flies off the edge towards the deep third boundary where Glenn Phillips takes a smart catch.

Thanks, Charlie. We are all in this together.

Four runs come from Mitchell Santner's latest over with England's victory target now below 500.

Will O'Rourke is indeed taking a breather as Tim Southee comes back into the attack.

Jacob Bethell might just be settling down again.

He begins the over with back-to-back fours through point. And, after sharing singles with Ollie Pope, clips the ball through square leg for another.

An angry Will O'Rourke goes for a bouncer to end the over, but it takes off and flies over the wicketkeeper for four byes.

Is that the signal for O'Rourke to have a breather?

I'll play devil's advocate on Crawley. In the last Ashes series he was key for England, highest batting average in the series, second highest total runs. He does win England games when he gets it right. He also works well with Duckett they are far more consistent than any other pair since Cook retired. The psychological side too is different for an opener Vs no3 for example. Crawley is very resilient so won't be affected by spells without runs. Yes he needs to improve but I don't think necessary he needs to be booted out.

  16. Eng 144-4published at 32 overs

A delivery from Mitchell Santner straightens on Ollie Pope and avoids the edge by millimetres.

The pressure is released by a full toss that Pope can swipe away for four.

England have now surpassed their first innings total.

  17. Eng 140-4published at 31 overs

Will O'Rourke bangs one in short and Jacob Bethell has to take evasive action, rocking back and watching the ball fizz past in front of his eyes.

Another delivery spits up and cannons into Bethell's ribs.

This is pace bowling at its finest.

  18. Eng 140-4published at 30 overs

Ollie Pope gets off the mark with a tentative prod into the point region.

New Zealand have their tails up and will be eyeing a few more scalps before lunch.

Will O'Rourke's dismissal ball to Harry Brook bounced an extra 20 centimetres compared to a delivery on a similar length to Bethell in his previous over - a bowler with O'Rourke's speed, height and bounce becomes even more threatening in these conditions.
