    Put down!

Joe Root should really be on his way. He serves up what looks a routine catch at slip but Tom Latham shells it down to his left.

Daniel Linton: I am still holding onto our 1% chance we win this Test match. The team we have is bonkers and they are bonkers enough to chase it down!

Henry bowls another short delivery next up and Bethell very nearly thinks about another pull before changing his mind.

A full delivery follows to try and catch Bethell out, but he jams the bat down just in time and the ball goes into the off-side for a single.

The partnership is now 58 from 60 balls.

Jacob Bethell takes on the short ball with a fielder on the rope, but it has enough height and distance to fly over the rope for six.

Henry looks frustrated but probably won't mind that.

'Catch it' is the shout as Jacob Bethell slightly mistimes a pull off the back foot, but it has just enough to clear mid-on and run away for four.

Nothing mistimed about this though. Overpitched from Southee and Bethell plays a textbook cover drive down on one knee for four.

    Shot!

Jacob Bethell's defences have been tested by some tight bowling from Matt Henry. But Bethell decides to go on the attack, skipping forward and wellying the ball back over Henry's head for four.

Henry's final ball of the over keeps very low, with Joe Root just about getting the bat down in time. That is something to keep an eye on.

It’s not that long since England scored over 800 in a Test. And no matter how frustrating, how conflicted we might feel at times, this team and management have brought entertainment, great skill, and a breath of fresh air to Test cricket.

A bit of fortune for Joe Root as he goes after the short ball but can only glove a pull around the corner, with the ball just evading wicketkeeper Tom Blundell and Mitchell Santner at leg slip.

Southee… Perhaps if Root and Brook get going then today isn’t his last day, I have set my alarm clock to see them knock 250 in the last session...

Ooh, Jacob Bethell very nearly plays on.

It is a lovely delivery from Matt Henry, full enough to lure the drive and just shaping in to the left-hander. But the ball flicks the inside edge, somehow evades the stumps, and flies down to third man.

Henry cannot believe that has missed.

Joe Root's timing is once again immaculate. It is a full delivery from Will O'Rourke and looks to be no more than a defensive push, but the ball absolutely fizzes to the boundary.

Root then ducks away from a wild bouncer that takes off and flies over wicketkeeper Tom Blundell's head for four byes.

A forward defensive push with soft hands from Jacob Bethell causes the ball to fly off the edge before disappearing wide of gully and to the rope.

Matt Henry then gets one to jag back in to Bethell and he is struck high on the back leg, prompting a brief strangled appeal.

Ball tracking subsequently revealed it had pitched outside leg anyway.

Just don't get it. After slowly bringing himself back from injury carefully, Stokes bowls 23 overs in a dead rubber. Adding it to the list of bonkers decisions this side make just when things are looking good.
