Summary

  1. Ind 40-1published at 6.2 overs

Ireland's batters seemed to get an edge on every single ball that misbehaved during their innings. India are missing all of theirs.

Curtis Campher gets one to rear up off a length and Rohit Sharma is squared up, but survives.

Josh Little's bowled 11 deliveries and he's gone for 21 runs.

I'd say nine or 10 of those balls have been too full.

  3. Ind 39-1published at 6 overs

    Target 97

Too wide from Josh Little, and that's a gimme.

Rohit Sharma moves to 27 with a perfectly timed cover drive for four.

India will be very happy with this powerplay. They've taken a decent chunk out of the target and crucially, only one wicket down.

  4. How's stat?!published at 17:41 British Summer Time 5 June

Rishabh Pant is typically here for a good time, not a long time. In his T20 international career, the average duration of his innings is 13.8 balls!

Mark Adair has tended to be Ireland's go to man for wickets and he's now bowled three out of his four.

  6. Ind 33-1published at 5 overs

    Target 97

Rishabh Pant is desperate to get a few boundaries away but Mark Adair's canny medium pace is proving difficult to connect with.

It's another neat over that is testing the batters, but still no wickets, which are the only way they're going to win this game.

After the pitch was doing all sorts when they were bowling, India seem to have decided that controlled aggression is the right way to go about this low chase.

  8. Ind 29-1published at 4 overs

    Target 97

Well, you can always rely on Rishabh Pant for entertainment!

It's a tidy over from Barry McCarthy, just three from it, and Pant almost swings himself off his feet trying to launch the last ball out of the ground.

Instead, there's daylight between bat and ball. Worth a try!

A dropped catch in the first over wouldn't have been in Ireland's plans...

  10. Ind 26-1published at 3 overs

    Target 97

The dynamic Rishabh Pant is in at three, and he wastes no time.

He whacks his second ball past mid-on for four.

It's actually reminiscent of the wicket of Mark Adair in the first innings. An incredibly expansive shot on a pitch that isn't offering assistance.

I have no idea why Virat Kohli has chosen to play an incredibly aggressive shot in a chase of under five an over. Ireland have a bit of light!

    WICKETpublished at 2.4 overs

    Kohli c White b Adair 1 (Ind 22-1)

    Three dots and the wicket!

Virat Kohli tries to release the pressure with a big shot. He times it quite well, but the ball flies straight into the hands of Ben White who safely pouches it at deep third.

The early breakthrough that Ireland were crying out for.

  13. Ind 22-0published at 2.3 overs

    Lovely from Mark Adair.

Three dots to the great Virat Kohli.

Mark Adair and Josh Little provide a formidable pace spearhead for the Irish attack.

Adair was named in the ICC T20 Team of the Year for 2023 while Little is the first Irish player to get an IPL contract.

They can create chances but Ireland must take them and the dropped catch from Andrew Balbirnie is something they simply can't afford when defending such a low target.

  15. 6 runs

    Ind 22-0published at 2 overs

    Target 97

    Nothing lucky about that one!

Rohit Sharma clubs the last ball of the over straight down the ground for six.

Too full from Josh Little, looking for the glory ball.

How much are Ireland going to learn from India? Bowling back of the length, they allowed the pitch to offer uncertainty. Utilise that.

  17. Ind 16-0published at 1.5 overs

    Target 97

No alarms yet for India. Josh Little gifts a couple of wides, and the seamers seem to be searching for wickets rather than letting the pitch do the work.

And right on cue, Rohit Sharma gets some luck. An edge flies past the stumps and down to fine leg for a fortuitous four runs.

With the second over, here comes Josh Little.

He will be keen to show India fans what they were missing in this year's Indian Premier League.

The Irish left-arm fast bowler played just one match for Gujarat Titans on 4 May, picking up 4-45, but spent the majority of the tournament carrying the drinks and is determined to prove a point in Wednesday's match.

"Do I want to? Yes, 100%. It's not ideal playing one game, but the one game I did play I thought I took my chance," the 24-year-old told BBC Sport.

"The boundaries are big in New York and I think it'll be a little bit different to what what the Indian boys were playing in the IPL. So I'm looking forward to bowling to them."

  19. dropped catch

Rohit dropped on 2published at 1 over

    Ind 7-0, target 97

    Oh, agony!

It's burst through Andrew Balbirnie's hands at second slip as Rohit Sharma flashes hard outside off stump. It flies to him, but should be taken - especially when they're only defending 97.

So, so close to the perfect start for Ireland.
