The surface almost nullifies the spinners, the ball skids a bit which makes it easier to play the ball.

Usually, if it's a bit breezy, that's a sign that they'll be some dew.

For those looking for some positive signs, England's expected score according to Cricviz's metric is 47-1. They've almost doubled that, but have lost one more wicket.

Spin for the first time today in the form of Glenn Maxwell, rather than Adam Zampa.

Joe Root and Ben Duckett initially content to work Maxwell into the gaps. However, Duckett decides to up the ante at the end of the over, biffing the Aussie off-spinner back over his head for four.

Duckett did not quite middle it, but it has enough on it to get over the rope.

The outfield looks unbelievable. I've played there before but it looks like it's been reworked and it's even quicker than it used to be. if England keep this up, they'll be in a great position.

  6. Eng 80-2published at 11 overs

    Picture-perfect timing from Joe Root.

The England batter gracefully flicks the fourth ball of Nathan Ellis' third over through mid-on to pick up his first four. It's testament to Root's clever working of the strike that he's 20 off 21 balls with just the one boundary.

Looks like the kind of pitch where pace will be easily dispatched to the boundary... and we have three pretty rapid bowlers in the line-up. Let's hope they use their variations well.

There seems to be a plan here from Australia. They're bowling a lot fuller to Ben Duckett, probably about a yard more than they usually do. That's something they would've learned from playing them previously.

  10. Eng 73-2published at 10 overs

Ben Duckett has looked fairly relaxed out in the middle. Very much someone who now looks completely at home in international cricket.

The England left-hander finishes the end of the powerplay with a pugnacious drive off Ben Dwarshuis. Duckett opened the face of his bat ever so slightly which allowed him to pierce the in-field.

Is it just me or have Australia bowled pretty waywardly here? They're fortunate to have two wickets.

  12. Eng 67-2published at 9.3 overs

Ben Dwarshuis into his fifth over in Lahore.

Too early to judge England's promotion of Jamie Smith to number three. But this was a relatively tame dismissal to start to the experiment.

Sad truth is that watching England as a passionate fan during circa 2016-9, you expected them to win. Watching in 2025 you totally expect them to lose. Anything else is a bonus.

I think the toss is quite important actually. If there is dew in Pakistan, you want to be batting when it's on the surface as it makes for a harder chase.

I think Australia have been trying to put England under as much pressure as they can. So far it's worked.

  15. Eng 64-2published at 9 overs

Nathan Ellis has a curious habit of holding the ball up with both hands at chest height, waggling his arms, before accelerating into his run-up.

The kind of idiosyncrasy you frequently see in junior players, but it ends up being ironed out by coaches.

A relatively tidy over from the Aussie seamer.

A non-scientific test of listening to the cheers at the toss suggests Australia might have the locals' backing today.

I think England will be quite happy with the 60 on the board, not the two wickets. They were two soft dismissals really but they have time to rebuild. Ben Duckett and Joe Root are arguably the best batters against spin so let's see if they can hold out over the next few overs.

That's an excellent piece of fielding from Marnus Labuschagne. You expect a high standard of fielding from an Australian side and we've seen that here so far.

  19. Eng 60-2published at 8 overs

England need Joe Root to settle in for the long haul here.

A fear early signs of a vintage Root innings could be in the offing.

Root gracefully works Ben Dwarshuis into the leg side for a couple, then only a brilliant piece of fielding from Marnus Labuschagne prevents a sumptuous straight drives from being more than a single.

Think Nick might be right... How are England two wickets down in these batting conditions? So wasteful from England!
