It's been a wonderful 50 from Ben Duckett, really well controlled.

Would you believe Freddie Mercury actually played cricket.

A colleague of mine, Jack Skelton, wrote a piece for Wisden Cricketers' Almanack on this very subject a few years ago.

Before he became the Queen frontman, Mercury - real name Farrokh Bulsara - grew up in Zanzibar and was sent to St Peter’s boarding school in Panchgani, India where he played it.

Depending on which of his former classmates or biographers you believe, he either "loathed" cricket, or was "especially good" at it.

Is it just me to think Ben Dwarshuis has a passing likeness to Freddie Mercury?

Adam Zampa is trying to trap Joe Root in his crease and hit him on the pad.

There's still no sign of turn on this surface. We've seen a 350 chase down here but 320 was caught. It really depends on if the dew comes down.

Adam Zampa has a pensive look on his face as he attempts to plot how to break this England partnership.

The leggie spins one past the defensive prod of Ben Duckett with the third ball of his second over, and enthusiastically trots through with his follow through hoping for an edge but there isn't one.

I'm not saying this pitch is a road but my wife has just gone to the supermarket and I'm sure I've just seen her driving past the umpire.

Decent start by England. But still much to do.

The fact that England have been bowled out in five out of the last seven ODIs will be playing in the back of their minds. They need to judge when to start pulling the trigger.

Spin from both ends as Steve Smith sticks with Glenn Maxwell despite Ben Duckett dispatching the final ball of his previous over on the concrete below the stands.

Five singles off the over as England cleverly keep the scoreboard ticking over in Lahore.

There's a more measured approach from England since the powerplay. Maybe it's because they're facing Australia, or maybe since the series against India they've discussed how they want to approach the game.

Adam Zampa into the attack for Australia. He's sporting the kind of shades you would expect Jean Reno to be wearing in the film Leon.

Ben Duckett and Joe Root work the ball into the gaps off the leggy. No big shot, yet...

The pace of play is definitely something that the players take advantage of. Some players want to take their time and play at their own pace but it forces them to play at the game's pace.

'Big hit!' - Duckett smashes Maxwell down the ground for six

It sure is coming. Ben Duckett tees off against Glenn Maxwell, walloping the Aussie off-spinner's final ball of the over downtown for six. A little premeditated, perhaps, but extremely effective.

    England into three figures.

From the end Glenn Maxwell is bowling, the shorter boundary is to Ben Duckett's off side and Joe Root's leg side.

How long until we see the Duckett reverse sweep?

Glenn Maxwell continues. Four singles milked off his first four deliveries as Ben Duckett and Joe Root farm the strike. Big shot coming?

England lost two wickets, but still have enough firepower with Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone and Brydon Carse to come in the batting order to maximise his excellent batting surface.

In the nine ODIs since International cricket returned to his venue batters have scored at 6.03 rpo and average 39.1 runs per dismissal - making it the venue with the best batting average and one of the quickest scoring in the timeline.

England will have their hopes pinned on Joe Root's experience to anchor this innings with all the dynamic batters around him today.

It definitely looks like the plan to face Ben Duckett is to go really full or really slow and take everything off it.

  20. Eng 91-2published at 13 overs

Is it just me, or does Nathan Ellis bear more than a passing resemblance to a young Nick Nolte?

Anyway, his diligent line keeps England's batters honest. Two singles to Joe Root, one for Ben Duckett off his fourth over.
