Hmm, the way India take wickets suggests that we might have a problem with our bowling… What about Jordan Clark replacing Chris Woakes, a fit Gus Atkinson replacing Josh Tongue, a Jamie Overton replacing Brydon Carse…ok, Jofra Archer then…even I admit Surrey don’t have a Test class spinner, but I wouldn’t mind seeing what Sam Curran could do instead of Ben Stokes!

Anon (but we're guessing a Surrey fan)

  2. Eng 59-3published at 14 overs

Ollie Pope takes the strike with a single off the final ball of Prasidh Krishna's over.

India hustle though and will have time for one more over here by the looks.

Mohammed Siraj is primed to bowl it.

There are still 10,000 tickets left for tomorrow...

  4. Eng 58-3published at 13 overs

Harry Brook has defended stoutly so far, and sees off an Akash Deep over fairly comfortably.

Here's England's tale of batting woe this evening...if you can bear to see it.

Ollie Pope is battling here, he is really struggling with the ball moving and getting his feet in the right place.

  6. Eng 56-3published at 12 overs

Akash Deep is tucking into a bar of some description down at fine leg as a reward for dismissing Joe Root.

I don't think it's a Refresher, which would be my choice in the circumstances.

Ollie Pope inside edges one into the pitch from Prasidh Krishna and the ball just misses his stumps before scurrying away for four.

Final ball of the over from Krishna cuts Pope in two.

  7. Eng 52-3published at 11 overs

Ollie Pope is joined by Harry Brook who was, let's be honest, all over the place when he came out to bat in the evening on day two. England need a much more composed approach from him this evening.

Screaming for a Ben Stokes 2019 masterclass now really. One can only pray!

This is outstanding at the moment. Akash Deep coming in with massive responsibility and always see Joe Root as a wall to get past - has just been bowled. Admirable performances from him.

England in big trouble at Edgbaston.

One of the players capable of batting long is rather grumpily trudging back to the pavilion after being bowled by Akash Deep, who celebrates by pointing to the badge on his shirt.

It was a superb delivery - Deep bowling wide of the crease seared one in towards Joe Root, who was looking to work it leg side, and then got it to wobble off the seam ever so slightly to clatter into his stumps.

Shubman Gill is an excitable captain with his reviews and that's two of them gone and how crucial could that be. You have to use your reviews wisely in Tests.

Very clearly falling in front. It's all happening, but Rishabh Pant did the right thing and said that he wasn't sure.

  13. Ball falls short of Pantpublished at 10 overs

Rishabh Pant was correct not to celebrate. The TV showed it did not carry.

  14. Umpire reviewpublished at 10 overs

Final ball of Prasidh Krishna's over and Ollie Pope with a bit of slash at one which looks to have hit the turf before Rishabh Pant caught it.

It's a bottom edge from Pope's bat and Pant does not celebrate, but since there is an appeal the umpires will take a look.

  15. Pope survivespublished at 9.3 overs

Missing leg stump. Another India review burned. Ollie Pope survives.

  16. India reviewpublished at 9.3 overs

Shubman Gill has gambled this time after Prasidh Krishna strikes Ollie Pope on the pad with a delivery angled into him.

This looks like it was sliding down leg.

  17. Eng 49-2published at 9.2 overs

A change of bowling as Prasidh Krishna is chucked the ball by Shubman Gill.

Here's how Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett perished a little earlier.

Akash Deep's gone wide off the crease and it's hit Joe Root pretty high, on top of the left pad and despite the impact being in line it was missing the wickets.

  19. Eng 48-2published at 9 overs

Akash Deep appeals vociferously after striking Joe Root high on the leg.

The India seamer had skilfully nipped one back into Root and it prompts a conversation with Shubman Gill. However, the India skipper opts against a review.

Gill's instincts are correct as the replay shows it was going over the stumps.

Never mind Jacob Bethell, who still doesn't have a first-class hundred, opening instead of Zak Crawley. What does Tom Haines have to do? Centuries for the Lions and a fine County Championship record over the last couple of seasons with Rob Key singing his praises. Shouldn't this count for something? Or am I a dinosaur?
