Boundaries, flying bats and dropped catches - Pant's 'box office' innings

  1. Eng 47-2published at 8 overs

Another wee tickle down to fine leg, this time from Joe Root who works Mohammed Siraj off his pads through fine leg.

Although he has the wicket of Zak Crawley, Siraj has yet to really get the bit between his teeth so far.

Out of the 102 innings Zak Crawley has played, he has recorded 42 single-digit scores - the most for a batter since his debut in Test cricket, including 10 ducks.

Ollie Pope when he comes out and plays like this is so edgy and so nervy. He needs to realize that Akash Deep is coming in wide of the crease and wants him to play across the line which is what he has done. He just needs to stay up right and play as straight as he can.

  4. Eng 43-2published at 7 overs

Akash Deep arrows his third ball in to Ollie Pope's toes and the England batter gets away with one. Pope attempts to work the ball into the on side and an edge flies down between gully and point for four.

Pope appears to be overbalancing when he plays that shot. A bit of a technical issue he needs to iron out.

Pope picks up another boundary with a leg glance for four off the final delivery of the over.

Can India ask for the extra half hour if England lose a few more?

England like to be trailblazers. Can we just declare and get this over with?

  6. Eng 33-2published at 6 overs

Ollie Pope is circumspect. Watchful. He's digging in here.

England are going to need some guts if they are to get themselves out of this one.

The Hollies is singing "if you still believe stand up" again.

Not as many are doing so as before Ben Duckett's dismissal.

On the basis Ollie Pope is, in effect, playing as an opener, why not put him up the order and bring Jacob Bethell into number three. Give Zak Crawley a rest to go back to his county and get some runs under his belt.

    Can Bethell open?

I don't like it when Joe Root looks angry. He's not an angry type, he's not a Virat Kohli-type player. I think he's better when he's calm and assured.

  10. Eng 31-2published at 5 overs

Joe Root joins Ollie Pope out in the middle. The ball is only five overs old.

England's hopes of drawing this match could largely rest of Root's shoulders.

Are we allowed to say that England have got to stop obsessing about chasing yet? Especially with this woeful bowling attack? Or has the Bazball police still banned any slight negativity?

    Adam

Can't see England making it to tea tomorrow I'm afraid.

Akash Deep is a quality player, we've been talking about Jasprit Bumrah at the start of the Test but we should have been talking about him. Four wickets in the first innings and now the key wicket of Ben Duckett.

Bang, bang. Just what India wanted with this new ball.

Ben Duckett had made a confident start but England have both openers back in the hutch and are teetering after Akash Deep, round the wicket, delivers a stump-shattering delivery.

Deep nips the ball on to the left-hander's defensive prod and Duckett inside edges it on to the top of middle.

This could get ugly pretty quickly for England.

CricViz supply us with a captaincy grid which suggests which bowler a captain should match up with each batter. Green indicates the perfect match, red is one to avoid. Akash Deep is green for both England openers. He's got one, can he get the other before the close?

Last week was the best I had seen Zak Crawley align a right-arm over bowler. This week and his guard has been off stump and his feet have been an inch outside off stump. So why has he changed his stance?

  16. Eng 26-1published at 4 overs

Mohammed Siraj gives Nitish Kumar Reddy a glare after Ben Duckett opens the face and guides the penultimate ball of the over through the cordon for four. Siraj chunters to himself at the end of the over.

Someone like Ben Duckett is such a good player, it is important that he plays his normal game.

  18. Eng 21-1published at 3.4 overs

Mohammed Siraj is bounding in with a thirst for the edge of Ben Duckett's bat.

However, the England left-handed opener uppishly slaps a wide one for four through point.

When you are a bowler who knows that they are only going to bowl six overs today and get some rest over night then they will charge in every time.

  20. Eng 14-1published at 3 overs

Ollie Pope managed to get off a king pair in the previous over and picks up two more with a cljp off his toes from the final ball of Akash Deep's second over.
