Summary

  1. Eng 508-4published at 91 overs

    Stokes 6, Brook 9

An early boundary for Ben Stokes, guiding the ball through the covers. He's settled very quickly. Harry Brook, by contrast, is looking a little skittish.

I confess I'd love to be the person who updates the honours board. But I also get quite stressed just trying to do bubble writing in a birthday card, so maybe it isn't for me...

Jack: That is one of the worst reviews ever from Pope… what was he thinking?

Dean, Dronfield: It annoys me how England routinely burn up reviews on lost causes. Pope must be the only person who didn't think that was out. A bad habit that we need to get out of.

  4. Eng 503-4published at 90 overs

So Ollie Pope is finally out and work can begin on adding his name to the Trent Bridge honours board.

Ben Stokes is quickly off the mark with a single.

That's the end of a very good innings. It's a nice delivery, ball swinging. Ollie Pope had a lot of pressure on him yesterday but he came out and responded.

It's out. There won't be a double hundred for Ollie Pope today. He drives, nicks it, and Tafadzwa Tsiga takes the catch behind the stumps. Good delivery from Chivanga.

With a big windmill of his arms, here comes captain Ben Stokes.

  9. England reviewpublished at 89.3 overs

We have a wicket... or do we?

Zimbabwe, and the umpire, think they have Ollie Pope caught behind. Pope, however, has other ideas.

It must be really dry out there. There's an even covering of ground but the ball is absolutely flying, it ended up over the keeper's head.

  11. Eng 499-3published at 89 overs

Blessing Muzarabani is briefly interested in an lbw shout against Harry Brook but the umpire is unmoved. There's a bit of fizz in his first over as he beats the bat a couple of times.

Tanaka Chivanga will open the bowling from the other end.

  12. Eng 499-3published at 88.1 overs

And we're off, with a quick single for Ollie Pope.

Blessing Muzarabani is opening the bowling for Zimbabwe.

The sun is shining and the players are out at Trent Bridge.

Ben Stokes has resisted the urge to declare so Ollie Pope (169) and Harry Brook (nine) will get us back under way, with England on 498-3.

  14. 'I've learned to live with the noise'published at 10:55 British Summer Time 23 May

Ollie Pope on Test Match Special: "The biggest challenge for me was when you watch a [big] partnership, it's trying not to tire yourself before you get out there. I was happy with how I switched on when I got out there and got into my innings quickly. I felt in good rhythm."

On the pressure to score runs after the opening partnership: "I had it in Pakistan where we made 800 and I got a duck. It's just getting off the mark, It was a really good pitch and a place I love batting. There's always pressures when you come out to bat but I felt good."

On competition for places with Jacob Bethell: "There's always going to be pressure for places in the England side. It's a good place for us to be. The way Jacob played in New Zealand, he played really nicely. For me it's trying to buy into the team, score as many runs as I can and do my job as vice-captain. There's always a lot of noise. I've learned to live with that."

On a possible double-hundred: "It's always nice to wake up on a score but you've got to start again. Just try and play each ball as it comes. I know the conditions and if I execute what I do well I can add a few more to the tally."

Zimbabwe spent most of yesterday without the services of opening bowler Richard Ngarava, who left the field with a back injury shortly after lunch.

This raised the question of whether injury substitutes should be allowed in cricket.

  18. I don't feel any extra pressure - Crawleypublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 23 May

Opener Zak Crawley said he was not feeling any extra pressure for his place in the England team before making 124 on the opening day of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe.

The 27-year-old endured a torrid tour of New Zealand at the end of last year and, along with number three Ollie Pope, appeared to be under threat from Jacob Bethell.

But with Bethell absent at the Indian Premier League, both Crawley and vice-captain Pope helped themselves to centuries as England piled on 498-3 at Trent Bridge.

Asked if he and Pope were feeling the squeeze on batting places, Crawley said: "I can't speak for Ollie, but I certainly don't feel like that.

"When you play for your country you are going to be surrounded by good players and that pressure is going to be coming all the time.

Runs flowed in Nottingham on day one, with England racking up 498-3 from 88 overs.

Ben Duckett (140) scored England’s first Test century of the summer and was soon followed to the milestone by Zak Crawley (124) and Ollie Pope (169*), both of whom were in desperate need of runs.

Joe Root could only score 34 before getting out to Blessing Muzarabani, but did pass 13,000 Test runs.

There’s been no declaration as yet, so Pope (169*) and Harry Brook (nine) will get us back under way shortly.
